Forest Barber ran steadily
faster laps in two practice sessions and
qualifying Friday at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and earned
the 16th overall starting spot for tomorrow's Emco Gears Mid-Ohio Road Racing
Classic Rolex series race.
The Fort Worth-based driver's
best lap in the 15-minute qualifying session Friday
afternoon was a 1:26.228 (94.271 mph), which was 15th in the Daytona Prototype
class. He'll share the Kodak EasyShare/Bell Motorsports DORAN JE4 Pontiac
#54 with the reigning Daytona Prototype champion, Terry Borcheller of Gainesville,
Ga., in tomorrow's race. It will be broadcast on SPEED on a tape-delayed
basis at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
Borcheller was at Mid-Ohio for
a promoter's test day on Thursday, and was fourth-fastest
in one of those sessions. He is also competing in an American Le Mans
Series (ALMS) race in Canada this weekend, but he'll be back at Mid-Ohio tomorrow
to compete in this 250-mile race. Barber's
qualifying run was marred by contact with another driver. The Kodak EasyShare
car sustained some damage to its nose and front splitter, but team owner
Jim Bell and the rest of the Bell Motorsports crew will have it fixed long
before tomorrow's race gets the green flag at 5:30 p.m.
Barber was 19th in the first
practice session Friday with a 1:27.852 (92.528 mph)
and 17th in the second practice session Friday with a 1:27.633 (92.760 mph).
"At least we're consistent," Barber said
after qualifications concluded.
"Terry [Borcheller] was
here yesterday but not today; he'll be here tomorrow for the
race. Yesterday the Kodak car was fourth-quick when Terry was in the car.
"We didn't have a good qualifying session
today, and we hope to make it up tomorrow. I
had contact with the #59, and there is damage to our nose and front splitter."
