Rookie Justin Lofton Rules at Michigan

BROOKLYN MI (6-14-08) – ARCA RE/MAX Series rookie Justin Lofton led the final 11 circuits Saturday at Michigan Int’l Speedway to win the Racing For Wildlife 200.

Lofton, in the Lofton Cattle Dodge, capitalized on the late-race misfortunes of Sean Caisse and then kept Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. at bay to earn his career-first series victory in only his eighth series attempt.

“I came into this series a young driver from California,” said Lofton. “I knew that I had the talent to be successful here, but I came in a little too aggressive and trying too hard. The last couple of weeks I just relaxed, spent some off-time to myself, and regrouped. I came into this a lot more relaxed and just let the race come to me. Also, honestly I had Eddie Sharp as my crew chief the last two weeks, and Laurin Ranier as my spotter. Eddie Sharp is the best crew chief and car owner in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. This was an emotional win for us.”

Lofton, who earned the SunTrust Highest Finishing Rookie of the Race award, became the eighth different winner after nine events in 2008. The Westmorland, California driver also established a new race record with an average speed of 150.596 mph, surpassing the old mark of 145.956 set by David Stremme in 2006.

Caisse, who led 51 of 100 laps, was leading with 12 laps to go when the Pelham, New Hampshire rookie made an unscheduled pit stop to replace a left-rear tire that had gone flat. Caisse, in the Shigeaki Hattori-owned Toyota, went one lap down in the exchange and finished 19th. Despite Caisse’s misfortunes, he earned the Klotz Halfway Leader award and the Aaron’s Lap Leader honors for leading the most laps.

Stenhouse, in the Roush Fenway Racing Ford, finished second nearly two seconds behind the winner. The Olive Branch, Mississippi driver also padded his point lead.

“We definitely didn’t start where we wanted to (21st), but we knew we had a good race car,” said Stenhouse. “We drove up through there to the first caution. I think we got up to 12th, then Lumpy decided to make a two-tire stop there. We got out in first and got the five points for leading a lap. The top three cars got by us with new tires, but we could stay right with them and they started coming back to us. Then we came in for our four-tire stop and got back out in the lead. It just wasn’t too good on new tires but it was pretty good on old ones.”

Frank Kimmel, who started 15th, steered the Ford Drive One-ECC Ford to the finish in third.

“We’re really happy with it,” said Kimmel. “It’s the third race with this car for us and we’re still learning on it. It’s a car we got from (Jack) Roush. It’s a really a nice race car; it’s a lot better than we are right now.”

Scott Speed, who fought a tight condition much of the race, finished fourth in the Red Bull Toyota. He also earned the Accel Fastest Lap of the Race award.

Brian Scott, in the Venturini Motorsports Chevrolet, battled back from a lap down to finish fifth.

SIM Factory Pole winner Speed led the first 14 circuits before Scott took control on lap 15. However, Scott gave up the lead to Stenhouse during first round pit stops when Stenhouse got off pit road first. Stenhouse led just two laps before Scott reassumed command. Then Caisse passed Scott for the lead on lap 31 and began to pull away from the field. Caisse led up through lap 59 before giving the lead back to Stenhouse during second round pit stops. But with Caisse on the continual charge, Stenhouse did not lead long before Caisse made the pass for the top-spot on lap 68. From there, Caisse continued to pull away from Lofton, who by then had also passed Stenhouse for position. But with a tire going down, Lofton quickly caught Caisse inside of 12 laps from the finish.

Patrick Sheltra finished sixth in the Ferguson Pipe-FloraGanics Dodge in front of Ken Butler III, who finished seventh in the Aaron’s Lucky Dog Dream Machine Toyota. Jesse Smith finished eighth in the Lloyd’s Barbeque-Hormel-Spam-Jones Group Dodge. Dexter Bean was ninth in the Glock Chevrolet. AJ Henriksen, who started 30th, finished 10th earning the Casite Hard Charger award for advancing the most positions.

Lofton’s crew chief Eddie Sharp earned the Cometic Gaskets Crew Chief of the Race.

The next event for the ARCA RE/MAX Series will be the Cayuga ARCA RE/MAX 250 at Cayuga Motor Speedway in Nelles Corners, Ontario Sunday, June 29th.

Rookie Stenhouse Stellar at Pocono

LONG POND PA (6-7-08) – ARCA RE/MAX Series point leader Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. survived a late-race restart and a last-lap charge from a Red Bull to win the wild Pocono 200 Saturday afternoon at Pocono Raceway.

“It was pretty tough,” said Stenhouse, who also earned the SunTrust Rookie of the Race award. “My restarts – I’ve been getting better. You had some people shifting; you had some people not. We were almost three-wide there going into turn one so I’m sure it was pretty exciting for the fans. I didn’t like it but we ended up pulling through it and ended up with the win.”

Stenhouse, in the no. 99 Roush Fenway Racing-Con Way Freight Ford, also became the first repeat winner in 2008 after eight events.

“I’m pretty excited about that (winning two races). Hopefully we’ll be the first to win three next week at Michigan. That’s what we’re shooting for.”

Speed, in the Red Bull Toyota, battled back from two cut tires to get within striking distance of Stenhouse, only to fall short by five lengths at the final stripe. The Manteca, California driver also made up more than 20 positions inside of 10 laps from the end to earn his second place finish.

“We were 25th with seven laps to go, and finished second,” said Speed, who was also the Aaron’s Lap Leader of the Race for leading the most laps (39). “I mean I definitely didn’t make too many friends out there but that was definitely an epic end to the race. Period. To be honest it was very surprising to be able to catch the 99 as much as we did. I mean we must have caught him a second a lap for the last two laps.”

SunTrust Rookie of the Year contender Tayler Malsam finished a career-best third in the Dodge Driver Development Dodge.

“I saw quite a bit from my view in the car,” said Malsam. “Definitely didn’t expect to finish in the top-three but I sure am glad it worked out the way it did. I’m hoping for some of the same at Michigan next weekend.”

Malsam was referring to the final restart with two laps remaining when Justin Lofton, looking for his career-first win, was positioned second behind Stenhouse with Robb Brent also in tow. But Lofton’s machine got loose in turn one following a mad scramble among the top-10 cars on the frontstretch. With Brent hard on the brakes to avoid Lofton, who eventually spun down into the infield grass, a hole opened for Malsam and Bobby Gerhart, both of whom charged underneath for position. Gerhart, in the Lucas Oil Chevrolet, ended up fourth.

“It’s been kind of a rough start this year, so this finish is especially gratifying,” said Gerhart. “We were tight all day. I’ve not run as good as I would have liked to this year and then on top of it, we’ve just been at the wrong place at the wrong time on several occasions. Either got fed up or been victimized by other people’s issues.”

Justin Allgaier, without first, second and fourth gears, somehow finished fifth in the AG Tech-Hoosier Tire Midwest Chevrolet.

“I really feel like we let this one slip away,” said Allgaier. “Felt like we had them covered today but you can’t win on a track you shift on with a broke transmission. In the end we were fortunate to finish fifth.”

Prior to his transmission issues, Allgaier posted the Accel Fastest Lap of the Race after leading 20 laps and was the Klotz Halfway Leader.

SIM Factory Pole Award winner Speed led the first 12 laps before Allgaier took control. Once Allgaier got out in front, the Springfield, Illinois driver opened up a big advantage before giving up the top-spot on lap 29 when he and the rest of the front-runners came down pit road for first-round pit stops.

When racing resumed, Bryan Silas and Dexter Bean, both electing not to pit, exchanged the lead for three laps before Speed reassumed command on lap 33. Speed led up through lap 47 before giving it up for an unscheduled pit stop to get four new tires – mainly a left-front, which had gone flat. Then a caution came in the nick of time for Speed, who was able to stay on the lead lap as a result. Speed quickly charged back into the lead on lap 53 but gave it up again on lap 65 for the same problem. Brent then led for a couple laps before Stenhouse emerged as the final leader on lap 67. Stenhouse then led the final 20 circuits, which included six overtime laps to accommodate the ARCA-mandated green-white-checker finish.

Brent, Bean, Dominick Casola, Michael Phelps and Gabi DiCarlo completed the top-10 respectively.

Speed’s crew chief Patrick Donahue earned the Cometic Crew Chief of the Race honors. Brian Kaltreider started 29th and finished 13th to earn the Casite Hard Charger award.

Rookie Matt Carter Takes Hantz Group 200 at Toledo

TOLEDO OH (5-18-08) – SunTrust Rookie of the Year leader Matt Carter looked more like an ARCA RE/MAX Series championship contender Sunday afternoon at Toledo Speedway.

Carter, in Larry Clement’s no. 46 Hantz Group-NuSouth Lemonade-Stine Seed Ford, survived several late-race restarts including a one-lap dash to the checkered flag to win the grueling Hantz Group 200 by Federated Car Care, becoming the seventh different winner in as many races this season.

“What a great day all around for this team,” said Carter. “We were absolutely horrible yesterday in practice and qualifying, but the team dug down and fixed up a really good handling car for the race today. All the guys that raced me for the lead raced me really clean, and it certainly could have gone the other way considering all those restarts that close to the end. Just want to thank my dad (Travis Carter), my sponsors and my car owner Larry Clement for the opportunity.”

After Carter fought off Dexter Bean over the course of six restarts inside of 50 laps from the finish, Carter refused a last-lap challenge from Patrick Sheltra to earn his career-first series victory in only his seventh start.

Sheltra, in the no. 60 Ferguson Pipe-FloraGanics Chevrolet, had a fender inside of Carter coming to the checkered flag and fell short by less than a length to finish a career-best second.

“I tried to race everybody clean and I think I did,” said Sheltra. “If I was in that same situation, I would hope that they would race me the same way. I went over and congratulated everyone that raced me clean. It’s fun to be a part of the ARCA RE/MAX Series and I am thankful to all of my sponsors, friends and family for their enormous support. I am so proud of everyone on this operation.”

Bean, after leading 37 laps in the no. 37 Glock Chevrolet, finished third on the heels of Sheltra. Bean, who started 21st, also earned the Casite Hard Charger Award and the Klotz Halfway Leader Award.

“We were doing a rain dance there for a while,” said Bean, who was leading the race on lap 106 when it was red-flagged for rain showers. “Later, we had a really good car on the restarts. I think we were getting through the gears a little bit better than the 46 but being pinched up on the corners there ate our tires away. It’s disappointing but we’ll take this finish for the Glock Chevrolet.”

Justin Allgaier battled back from two laps down to finish fourth in the no. 16 Hoosier Tire Midwest-AG Tech Chevrolet.

“We got down two laps so I’m just glad that we were able to recover from that,” said Allgaier. “The best part of this finish is breaking the bad luck streak that we have been having these last couple of weeks.”

David Ragan, an ARCA RE/MAX Series veteran who traveled to Toledo Speedway after racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on Saturday night, finished fifth in the no. 39 Roulo Brothers BeavEx-Reliance Tools Ford.

“Our car was pretty fast all day long,” said Ragan. “We needed some more green flag racing there at the end and I think that if that weather wouldn’t have come along it would have been different. The best car didn’t win today but that’s why there’s another race sometime down the road. I’m disappointed but I really can’t complain. Anytime that you can finish a race fifth with all four fenders on the car, you have to be happy. I need to thank everyone on this BeavEx-Reliance Tools Roulo Brothers Ford.”

The race, during which six drivers exchanged the lead 11 times, was extended by four laps to accommodate the ARCA-mandated green flag finish. Few cars left unscathed as 18 cautions waved for 114 laps, some of which were run to help dry off the track from persistent rain showers that plagued the race most of the way. The race was also red flagged for nearly two hours because heavy downpours.

In all, Carter led the most laps (68) earning the Aaron’s Lap Leader Award as well as the SunTrust Rookie of the Race honors.

Andy Hanson, in his career-first series start, earned the SIM Factory Pole Award with a new one-lap track record averaging 113.272 mph. The Ramsey Minnesota driver, who finished eighth in the race, also posted the quickest lap during the race earning the Accel Fastest Lap Award. Hanson’s crew chief Mike Chaffee earned the Cometic Crew Chief of the Race Award.

Scott Speed finished sixth in the No. 2 Red Bull Toyota, followed by Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., Hanson, Ken Schrader and Tom Hessert III.

Stenhouse Earns Career First Victory at Kentucky, Gains Points Lead Going to Toledo

SPARTA KY (5-10-08) – SunTrust Rookie of the Year contender Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., in the No. 99 RoushFenway.com Ford, got the best of Scott Speed over the course of three late-race restarts to earn his career first ARCA RE/MAX Series victory in only his sixth series start Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway.

The Olive Branch, Mississippi driver not only left with the top trophy, he also left with the point lead by a slim five point margin over Frank Kimmel.

“I don’t know if it has really sunk in yet,” said Stenhouse. “I think the win probably won’t sink in until a little later on. We’ve come out here and have had good runs and to finally have a win is great. We’re coming towards the end of a long stretch of races and so hopefully after winning here we can do well at Toledo and go off on a high point before taking a few weekends off. The Roush Fenway Ford Fusion and the Roush Yates engines are awesome. We could pull up next to someone and just keep going. I’ve actually been struggling really bad on the restarts until those last few. The thing that really helped was nailing those restarts.”

Speed, who led 55 of 112 laps in the Red Bull Toyota, had a 10-length advantage over the field with less than 10 laps remaining before a series of late-race wrecks bunched the field up time and time again. Speed survived the first green-white-checkered restart, but not the second during which Stenhouse got a run and blew by on the outside. Speed would get one more chance to get the lead back on the final restart, but to no avail. Stenhouse held firm and cruised under the checkered flag .374 seconds in front of Speed, who finished second.

Surrey British Columbia driver Ryan Fischer battled back from an early-race spin to finish a career-best third in the Venturini Motorsports-TufTruckdirect.com Chevrolet. Fischer’s crew chief Billy Venturini earned the Cometic Crew Chief of the Race award as a result.

Speed’s teammate Ken Butler III, who started 20th, finished fourth in the Aaron’s Lucky Dog Dream Machine Toyota earning the Casite Hard Charger award. John Wes Townley finished fifth in the Zaxby’s-SPS-BB&T Ford.

Rookie Sean Caisse, in his first series start, was impressive earning the SIM Factory Pole Award and leading the first seven laps before Bill Davis Racing’s Michael Annett took control of the top-spot on lap eight. Annett led up through lap 31 before rookie Jake Francis marched his way into the lead on lap 39. Francis led the next 13 circuits before Speed, fresh from his one and only pit stop, passed Francis for the lead on lap 52. From there, Speed kept the field at bay, leading the way up through lap 106 before Stenhouse took control for good.

The race was extended 12 laps to accommodate the ARCA-mandated rule that no race can finish under caution. Ten cautions slowed the race for 55 laps for a variety of incidents. Despite all the cautions, only five cars were listed as ‘accidents’ on the final result sheet. There were no injuries.

The late-race restarts also played havoc with teams’ fuel mileage plans. Tom Hessert III was running third coming to the final restart when his Maaco Auto Painting Ford ran out of gas. Speed’s fuel tank also went bone-dry as the Manteca, California driver crossed under the checkered flag after stretching his final run 84 laps.

Stenhouse also earned the SunTrust Highest Finishing Rookie of the Race honors while Speed was credited with the Aaron’s Lap Leader award for leading the most laps. Francis was the Klotz Halfway Leader. Caisse posted the Accel Fastest Lap of the Race.

Rookie Joey Logano Conquers Rockingham in Career-First ARCA RE/MAX Series Attempt

ROCKINGHAM NC (5-4-08) – Most say that Rockingham Speedway is one of the toughest, most challenging tracks on anyone’s tour. However, someone forgot to tell ARCA RE/MAX Series rookie Joey Logano, who made his victory in Sunday’s Carolina 500 look simple.

Logano, in the no. 25 Venturini Motorsports-prepared Joe Gibbs Racing Oil-Gresham & Associates Chevrolet, led 257 of 312 laps to conquer the “Rock” in his career-first ARCA RE/MAX Series start. Logano also earned the Aaron’s Lap Leader award for leading the most laps.

“I have to thank the Joe Gibbs crew for pitting me,” said Logano. “They kept me out front. We’re going to get a shot at Dover coming up, and hopefully we’ll see victory lane there too. I wasn’t running flat out the whole race. You’ve got to pace yourself. That’s a really big deal here at The Rock.”

Outside of a late-race wrestling match with Ken Schrader and mid-race battle with Michael Annett and Matt Hawkins, Logano had nary a challenger during the 500 kilometer/312-mile race.

With only five drivers on the left on the lead lap, Logano pitted for fresh tires 10 laps from the finish. Logano, who restarted fourth, was leading before the field completed one lap. From there, the Middletown, Connecticut driver pulled away by more than four seconds over Schrader, who finished second in his own no. 52 Four Winds Motorhomes Dodge.

“I would have loved to have won but it’s neat to see the fastest car win a race and that’s what happened today,” said Schrader. “I have to thank Johnny Benson who came out here and practiced the car for us on Friday. It was good. We just didn’t have anything for [Joey] Logano. We didn’t pit for tires at the very end there because we didn’t have any tires, but even if we did, we probably wouldn’t have pitted. We’re low budget so if there is an opportunity to cut costs anywhere, we do it.”

Schrader, who started 31st, also earned the Casite Hard Charger award for advancing the most positions.

Roush Fenway Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., the only other driver who pitted with Logano during that final stop, finished third.

“All of the guys had great pit stops,” said Stenhouse. “Lumpy left us a set of tires for the end and that was good pit strategy. I just can’t thank these guys enough. It was a blast. You go back to sprint car days, you just come in put a right rear on and it just lights the thing up.”

Stenhouse, who moved to third in championship points, was also the SunTrust Highest Finishing Rookie.

Hawkins, in the JaniKing-Black’s Tire Dodge, finished fourth. Annett, in the Bill Davis Racing Pilot Travel Centers Toyota, finished fifth, the last driver on the lead lap.

At one point, Logano had lapped the entire 50-car field with the exception of the second place driver. Only varying pit stop sequences and the Aaron’s Lucky Dog award got more machines back on the lead lap for the chance to challenge in the final stages.

Logano, who earned the SIM Factory Pole Award on Saturday with a new ARCA RE/MAX Series one-lap track record (146.645 mph), also posted the Accel Fastest Lap of the Race with a top speed of 140.812 mph. Logano’s crew chief Billy Venturini won the Cometic Crew Chief of the Race honors.

Chad McCumbee finished sixth in the Danco Electrical Contractors Chevrolet in front of Austin Dillon, who finished seventh in his career-first series attempt in the Garage Equipment Supply Chevrolet. Current ARCA RE/MAX Series point leader Matt Carter finished eighth in the Stine Seed-NuSouth Lemonade Ford. Tom Hessert III finished ninth in the Maaco Auto Painting-Boudreaux’s Butt Paste Ford, moving to a tie with Stenhouse for third in series points. Frank Kimmel finished 10th in the FordDriveOne.com-ECC Ford.

Four drivers traded the lead 10 times while 13 cautions slowed the race for 92 laps. Lap leaders included Hawkins (25), Annett (17) and Schrader (13). There were no injuries.
