Horag-Lista Racing's
Lista-sponsored Lola B05/40 Judd No. 27 earned its first LMP2 class triumph in
only its third Le Mans Endurance Series (LMES) race ever when Didier Theys and
Eric van de Poele took the checkered at the famous Nurburgring here today.
Theys, a native of Belgium and a resident of Scottsdale,
Ariz., and van de Poele, also a native of Belgium, finished seventh overall and
won their class handily. van de Poele was a late substitute for driver/car
owner Fredy Lienhard of Niederteufen, Switzerland, who was suffering from
unexpected back problems.
Theys qualified third in the very competitive class of 12.
He and van de Poele each did a triple stint in the six-hour race. Theys
said the team's car preparation, pit stops and strategy, combined with the Lola
Judd's excellent fuel mileage and Michelin tires, were the keys to the
impressive victory.
"It was a big fight in all the classes," Theys said
afterwards. "It was a 1,000 kilometer or six-hour race, and we ended
up doing the six hours so it was quite long. We went back and forth in the
lead with the Belmondo Racing team, and we were always about 10 seconds apart.
Then near the end they had to make one more pit stop than we did and they had
suspension problems too, so we ended up winning by 10 laps.
"It was great to be on the podium, especially since this
is only our third race and we only put the team together a few months ago,"
he added. "We had great weather, which is unusual for the Nurburgring, and
it was a great weekend."
The Belmondo team's Paul Belmondo, Didier Andre and Yann
Clairay finished second in a Courage while the class pole-winning RML team of
Mike Newton and Tommy Erdos was third in another Lola. The latter team was
third when it made its final pit stop but it reportedly lost time when it had
trouble refiring its engine after that stop.
The Horag-Lista team had no such problems and with the
victory it is especially looking forward to the LMES series' next race,
the season finale in Istanb ul, Turkey Nov. 12-13. Before that the team
plans to compete in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS)'s second-biggest race of
the year, the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta Motorsports Park in Braselton, Ga.
on Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
