School Buses Invade Kil-Kare Friday

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. - The school students might be back in school this week or soon, so if they would like to see the school buses that transport them to school doing something unusual then Kil-Kare Speedway is the place to be this Friday.

Instead of traveling  the streets and highways the normally bright yellow buses will be performing in a different manner. When they take to the figure-8 course at the popular speedplant they will be trying to avoid a collision at the intersection at the X on the fifth-mile track which demands the maximum driving skill of the drivers to do so.

For those that survive the figure-8 event it will be school bus demolition derby time as they line up and at the signal start crashing into each other until one running bus is left to claim the honors of demolition derby champion.

Before this special event the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Socks, and Compacts will be in action with a full racing program.

Spectator gates open at 6 p.m. with racing at 8 p.m. For information visit www.kilkare.com or call 937 429-2961.

Carter Claims First Kil-Kare Win

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. - Although Friday the 13th is know as an unlucky date to some it certainly did not faze David Carter one bit Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway. Driving the Mark Wolfe owned The Race Shop/Zodiac Super Store late model and in only his second appearance of the season, young Carter went home the winner of his first NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sonic Drive-In feature on the tricky 3/8ths mile asphalt oval.
Polesetter Tony Brunke jumped into the lead at the drop of the green for the thirty lap feature with Russ Bobb and Matt Parsons right behind him as they completed the first lap. Brunke would show as the leader the next eight laps but on the move was Carter who the week before had placed third in the Robbie Dean memorial event. From his tenth place starting slot he had advanced to third by lap seven and then went after second place running Bobb making good on an outside pass and then did the same to leader Brunke to show as the leader on lap ten.
While Carter had stole the show veteran driver Dick Dunlevy had been sneaking around the cars in front of him from his eighth place starting position to drop Brunke to third as Dunlevy used the outside groove to do so. Also on the move was fast timer and eight time feature winner Don Mahaffey who was on Dunlevy's tail by lap thirteen which saw him drop Dunlevy to third with Mahaffey now in the chase of leader Carter.
A caution appeared on lap seventeen and mysteriously Mahaffey departed to the pits giving second place for the restart to his teammate Mike Stacy but Stacy brought the caution out one lap later when he spun between turns three and four which saw him sent to the rear. Dunlevy was now back in second and riding third was the winner of the Robbie Dean memorial Sloan Henderson who started eleventh. As the laps wore down Carter enjoyed a good lead when he received the checker flag with Dunlevy in only his second late model appearance of the year home runner-up with Henderson third. Making a mad dash toward the front from the tail due to the earlier spin was two time feature winner Mike Stacy who displaced Sam Heckman with three laps to go to claim fourth with Heckman fifth.
The hottest driver in the modified division this season certainly is Greg Stapleton as he posted fast time thirteen times so far and recorded his eighth feature win Friday.
Seventeen mods took the green flag in in the fully inverted thirty lap feature with former dirt track driver Grant Gamble having the lead going out of turn two but that was short lived as Jerry Stapleton was the front runner when they hit the stripe. Unfortunately Gamble's luck ran out on lap three when he smacked the turn four wall and was trailered.
On the restart Jason Mahaffey took the front spot with Shawn Stansell in tow to drop Stapleton to third but here came Stapleton's nephew Greg Stapleton who dropped uncle Jerry to fourth on lap eleven. Stansell would be the next victim to fall back a spot as Greg took second on lap seventeen.
Greg had the lead but second fast timer Steve Foster and fifth fast timer Brad Williams were right behind the leader when the white flag flew. At the checker it was Greg Stapleton claiming his seventh win in the Stapleton Machine & Tool car followed by Steve Foster, Brad Williams, Jason Mahaffey, and Caleb Reschar.
In the make-up feature that was rained upon July 30 it was a heart breaker for Caleb Reschar. Reschar had been the leader on July 30 with one lap completed and Friday night held that spot the first twenty six laps. Greg Stapleton played it cool riding second until the five laps to go signal and then it was goodbye Reschar as Stapleton took the front spot to claim the win, his eighth and fourth in a row with Reschar runner-up. Brian Reeser was a close third with rookies Brandon Oakley and Ryan Fleming fourth and fifth.
Jay Lakins Jr. started on the pole of the twenty lap sport stock feature but it was John Haney who had the lead on the first lap with James Harding second but Haney's lead was short lived as Harding had the lead by lap three. Six time fast timer Shawn Stansell was working the outside of Haney and finally got around Haney on lap sixteen with an outside pass. Harding had nearly a half lap lead when the checker fell as he claimed his third win in his All City Auto Wrecking special with Stansell second but unfortunately Stansell did not report to the scales and was delegated to the last position. Stansell's misfortune moved John Haney up to the runner-up finish with Ron Lewis third, Rodney Kreusch fourth, and Travis Digges fifth.
Friday the 13th apparently played a role in the compact feature as no less than five cautions appeared in the twenty lap feature causing several long delays. Dewayne Snyder Jr. led the first or perhaps we should say survived the first twelve laps with a lot of wild driving around and behind him with the event cut to fifteen laps due to all the mishaps. Taking the win for the fourth time was Bo Hoelscher with Snyder second as Paul Holley, Shane Sparkman, and Steve Barnhart rounding out the top five.
The final event of the night was the FAST Midwest Legend Cars which had twelve cars start their twenty five lap feature. Kyle Baugh, winner of the last appearance of the legend cars led the first lap with Bryan Nuckles second and Levi Rochester third. Nuckles, a many time winner at Kil-Kare in the years past took the lead from Baugh but fast timer and previous winner Travis Braden was on the move as he darted under Nuckles to show as the leader on lap five. Braden then pulled away, putting some distance on second place running Nuckles  and when the checker waved it was Braden home first with Nuckles second and Baugh third. Rochester and Heath Tatman rounded out the top five.
Next Friday, August 20, will see the second crazy School Bus Figure-8 and Demolition Derby along with the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models, modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m. Visit www.kilkare.com or call 937 429-2961 for details.

Mahaffey Rules Kil-Kare Again

 by Jerry Wahl

 Xenia, OH (7/30) -

It was USG night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway which saw Dayton's Fon Mahaffey continue his dominance as he claimed his ninth late model feature of the year making it a clean sweep for the Oakley Blacktop cars as Mike Stacy and Jason Mahaffey, also in Oakley cars placed second and third.

Teammates Mike Stacy and Don Mahaffey led the field to the green with Mahaffey jumping out front with Stacy second and Jason Mahaffey third with Oakley Blacktop cars holding the top three spots. New track record holder Sloan Henderson was riding fourth when on lap four Ray Muncy spun on turn one and Terry Scherz brushed the turn one wall but was able to continue.

Mahaffey again set sail on the restart with a real battle for the rear of the field cars of Terry Scherz, Ray Muncy, Bob Sibila, and Russ Bobb.  The caution flew again on lap twelve when Ray Muncy, Bob Sibila and Russ Bobb spun on turn four. Again the field bunched up for the restart and again Mahaffey took off leaving Stacy, Jason Mahaffey, Sloan Henderson and Bobby Justus to fend for themselves.

As the laps wore down Mahaffey moved into traffic and Sibilia retired to the infield. Mahaffey continued lapping cars  as he still stretched his lead and claimed his ninth feature of the year with the Oakley cars claiming the top three spots with Mike Stacy secBond and Jason Mahaffey third. Sloan Henderson wound up fourth and Bobby Justus fifth.

The Sonic Drive-In late model  first heat was led to the green by Matt Parsons and Bobby Justus with Justus taking the lead followed by Parsons and Mike Stacy. Stacy took second and set sail for leader Justus while Gary Estes held fourth position. Justus held on to claim the win with Stacy second, Parsons third and Estes fourth.

Tony Brunke and Russ Bobb started on the front row of the second heat and when the green flew it was Brunke surging into the lead with Bob Sibila into second with Terry Scherz and Sam Heckman battling for fourth when Heckman slowed. Sibila chased down leader Brunke as he tried the outside but Brunke took the win with Sibilia second and Scherz a very close third with Russ Bobb fourth.

Caleb Reschar and Travis Braden led the pack to the green in the modified feature only to see the caution fly calling for a restart. Reschar got the lead with fast timer Greg Stapleton moving into second with Braden  third and Brian Reeser in fourth when Ray Muncy spun on turn one when Muncy and Shawn Stansell bumped with one lap completed.

Both Muncy and Stansell were sent to the rear of the field but action was halted when rain drops started to fall. Unfortunately the rain forced the feature to be called off and will be completed in two weeks with the field locked in as they were running on lap one.

Ryan Fleming and Shawn Stansell were the pace setters in the first modified heat with Flyin' Ryan taking the lead over Stansell, Brian Reeser and Brandon Oakley. Fleming put a little distance on the field as Reeser tried the outside of Stansell to no avail as the white flag flew with Fleming taking the checker first followed by Stansell, Reeser, and Oakley.

Veteran Darrel Skaggs and Grant Gamble were in the front row of the scond heat but it was Darrel Skaggs taking the lead as Jerry Stapleton moved up to challenge Skaggs. Stapleton took the lead on lap four but here came Gary Eaton into second and Ray Muncy third. Stapleton held the front spot for the win with Eaton second followed by Ray Muncy and Darrel Skaggs.

Twenty five laps faced the sport stocks for their feature with Heat winner Joe Hensel on the pole with Shawn Stansell alongside. Stansell got the jump with fast timer Travis Digges challenging Hensel for second but James Harding zipped into third with Ron Lewis passing Digges who slipped back to fifth. Stansell continued to lead but Hensel was not far behind while back in the field Jay Lakins Jr. and Chris Boggs battled for eighth. Stansell was looking for his third feature win but one time winner Hensel was within striking distance.

On lap fourteen Hensel lost control coming out of turn four and did a 360 and kept right on racing as he fell back to ninth leaving Stansell with a good lead over now second pace running Harding. Stansell and his Affordable Auto Parts special did claim their third feature of the season with Harding second followed by Lewis, Digges, and Jamie Sites.

Sport stock first heat was led to the green by Ron Lewis and James Harding in the front row with Harding holding the lead down the backstretch but Lewis ran right alongside of him finally taking the lead on lap three. Joe Hensell then moved past Harding to challenge Lewis with Hensell showig as the leader on the white flag lap. It was Hensell taking the win with Lewis second and Shawn Stansell just slipping by Harding for third with Harding fourth.

It was Will Gregory and Jay Lakins Jr. in the front row of the second heat with Lakins taking command as fourth place starter Jamie Sites advanced to seccond and then went to work on Lakins. Side by side they ran with neither driving giving an inch but it was Sites finally taking the point while Chris Boggs moved up to challenge Lakins for second. Sites took the win with Boggs stealing second followed by Lakins and will Gregory.

Chris Linley and Gerald Miller led the FAST legend cars to the green in their feature with Miller in the lead down the backstretch but by the time they reached the frontstretch it was Bryan Nuckles taking the lead and pulling away from the pack. Fast timer Travis Braden was running second with Linley third and Heath Tatman fourth when the yellow flew for a spinning car.

The restart gave Braden a chance to challenge Nuckles for the lead but just  after the green flew Joey Greening and Kevin Donahue tangled on the backstretch slowing the field again. Nuckles had his hands full with Braden knocking on his rear bumper as he tried to unseat Nuckles as Braden tried the inside but Nuckles shook him off and again the yellow flew as Shelby Campbell spun on turn four.

Again Braden was on Nuckles rear bumper and now Kyle Baugh joined the front runners as he ran third and Heath Tatman fourth. As the hard running Nuckles and Braden were dogging each other Braden made contact with Nuckles with Nuckles spinning on the backstretch with both cars sent to the tail which now saw Baugh in the lead. Baugh set the pace but Braden was on the move as he was up to second on the white flag lap with Nuckles right behind. At the checker it was Baugh the winner with Braden on his bumper in second with third going to Tatman followed by Nuckles and Joey Greening.

Heath Tatman and Kyle Baugh led the field in the FAST legend cars first heat with Baugh taking the lead as Braden and Bryan Nuckles battled for third with Tatman running second. The top four cars ran bumper to bumper with a little e bumping going on. Baugh held the spot to take the win with Tatman taking second by inches over Braden who was third.

Justin Campbell and Kevin Donahue were the leaders of the pack in the second heat with Campbell getting the lead on a very slow green flag start. Donahue was not far behind in second with Denny Andrews running third and Shelby Campbell fourth. Donahue tried to make a pass on turn four but Justin Campbell held on for the win followed by Kevin Donahue, Denny Andrews, and Shelby Campbell.

The next to last event of the night was the twenty lap compact feature which had Paul Holley and Joe Hoelscher in the front row. Holley was looking for his first feature win and for Hoelscher it was win number four he was seeking. Holley enjoyed the lead at the start with Bryan Lynch challenging when he slid off the track into the infield leaving Joe hoelscher and Bo Hoelscher now challenging Holley. Bo passed dad Joe for second and went after leader Holley with Joe still in hot pursuit. It was a real battle for the front three spots as Holley woud not give up the lead with the Hoelscher's right behind. Bo Hoelscher slipped on the inside off Holley for the lead and then with three laps to go Holley and Hoelscher tangled with Bo sideways and the caution in the air and Holley was sent to the tail.

Now Bo Hoelscher was in the lead on the restart with Tyler Mahaffey now second and Joshua Spriggs in third. At the checker it was Bo Hoelscher claiming his fourth win of the year. rookie tyler Mahaffey was home second followed by Joshua Spriggs, Paul Holley, and Dewayne Snyder Jr.

The always wild and exciting compacts had Bo Hoelscher and Tyler Mahaffey on the front row of the first heat with Hoelscher beating rookie Mahaffey for the lead as Paul Holley jumped into second as Mahaffey faded. Fast timer Bryan Lynch moved into third followed by Joe Hoelscher. Bo held on to the lead to take the win with Holley second just beating Lynch to the line who was third with Joe Hoelscher fourth.

It was Steve Barnhart and Dewayne Snyder Jr. on the front row of the second heat as they diced for position only to see the caution fly when Bradley Adkins got sideways going into the first turn making a restart necesary. Barnhart got the lead but Adkins slipped by him for the front spot as Joshua Spriggs moved into second with david Sagers shooting up to third. Adkins continued to lead when Sagers slipped off the backstretch bringing out the caution on  and when the green flew again lap four Adkins stayed in front to claim his first heat win of the year followed by Spriggs, David Sagers and Dewayne Snyder Jr.

Next Friday night Kil-Kare will present the annual Robbie Dean Memorial 94 lap late model feature along with modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.

Who Can Stop Mahaffey at Kil-Kare?

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. - That seems to be the question the drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models seem to be asking each other as Dayton's Don Mahaffey Jr. has been the dominant one this year.
The second generation driver has posted fast qualifying time on eight of the eleven events so far on the three-eights mile asphalt track even setting a new track record of 13.378. But that is not what concerns his opponents as on eight occasions he has also secured feature wins in his Oakley Blacktop backed machine.
So far his main opposition has been his teammate Mike Stacy who has laid claim to the other three feature events but when Mahaffey breaks loose from the field and Stacy, Stacy might as well figure on a second place finish.
Also on the program will be the modifieds, sport stocks, compacts, and the FAST Midwest legend cars will be making their second stop at the track.
Spectator gates open at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m. Visit www.kilkare.com or call 937 429-2961 for information.
The next special event at Kil-Kare will be the annual Robbie Dean Memorial 94 lap Sonic Drive-In late model feature on August  6.

Mahaffey,Stapleton, Stansell, Lynch Visit Victory Lane at Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. - It was definitely a hot night at Kil-Kare Speedway but the fans showed up for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events and the crazy trailer race of destruction.

Claiming feature wins were Don Mahaffey in the Sonic Drive-In late models, Greg Stapleton in the modifieds, Shawn Stansell in the sport stocks, Bryan Lynch  in the compacts.

Fifth fast qualifier Tony Brunke and fourth fast timer Ray Muncy led the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sonic Drive-In late modells to the green with Brunke nosing ahead of a pack of five close running cars. Muncy then surged ahead with Mike Stacy challenging Brunke as he took second with Sam heckman dropping Brunke back to fourth. Fast timer Don Mahaffey then went to work on the field taking fourth and then worked on heckman for third. Next would be his teammate Stacy who was right on Muncy's bumper.

Mahaffey put his hose on the inside of Stacy as they ran door to door chasing leader Muncy. Muncy had his hands full holding off Mahaffey and Stacy  as they both tried to go around Muncy at the same time but it didn't work as Muncy shook them off. Then the caution flew on lap sixteen when Russ Bobb spun into the infied and Muncy and Heckman spun on turn four. Muncy was determined the cause of the caution and wea sent to the tail. This set the stage for a showdown between Stacy and Mahaffey with Mahaffey taking the lead on lap nineteen.

Mahaffey did his usual, pulled away from the field leaving Stacy riding second , Heckman third with Brunke fourth and Terry Sscherz fifth.

Mahaffey's Oakley Blacktop  special took the checker for his sixth win of the year. Stacy was home second followed by Heckman, Brunke, and Scherz.

It was the younger against the older in the modified feature as seasoned Jerry Stapleton and fifteen year old Flyin' Ryan Fleming started on the front row with Stapleton taking the lead with Fleming second and another rookie, Brandon Oakley riding third. Right behind them fast timer Greg Stapleton was on the move on the outside passing car after car and then passed his uncle Jerry on lap eight for the lead. Jerry did not give up easy but once Greg had a clear shot in the lead he pulled away from Jery only to have the caution appear on lap ten when Caleb Reschar spun.

Greg again started to put some distance over the field after the restart and at the halfway point it was Greg, Jerry, Oakley, Ray Muncy, and Derek Barnette the top five. The second caution flew on lap eighteen when Derek Barnette and Shawn Stansell bumped on the backstretch with Barnette spinning.

Away went Greg Stapleton on the restart and back in the field Caleb Reschar was a driver on a mission as he worked his way around cars trying to make up spots from his earlier spin.  With seven laps to go the caution flew when Oakley tried to slip under Jerry Stapleton going into turn one and it didn't work as he bumped Jerry and they spun to a stop going out of turn two which sent Oakley to the tail.

The full moon kicked in when caution again flew on lap twenty six when Ray Muncy spun coming out of turn four and Shawn Stansell and Jason Mahaffey were involved which took Stansell and Mahaffey out however Stansell was able to return after quick repairs. At the same time Derek Barnette blew a tire and hit the turn one wall hard resulting with heavy front end damage which put him on the sidelines. Muncy also dropped out of competition.

Reschar was up to third as he set sail for Jerry Stapleton as the white flag flew with Greg Stapeton claiming his fifth feature of the year. Jerry Was second with Reschar third and it was a thriller for fourth as Brandon Oakley barely nipped Grant Gamble for fifth at the line.

First heat of modifieds has Shawn Stansell and Jerry Stapleton in the front row Stapleton got the jump over Stansell to take the lead with Stansell second and Ryan Fleming. Doing triple duty driving in three classes tonight was Ray Muncy who tried to catch Fleming as Stapleton held the lead and the top four ran bumper to bumper. As the checker waved it was Stapleton taking the win followed by Shawn stansell and Ryan Fleming.

Veteran Indiana driver Darrel Skaggs sat on the pole of the first heat with second year driver Grant Gamble on the outside. Skaggs took the lead but it was his teammate Joe Jennings taking over the front spot as Skaggs dropped back. Derek Barnette and Caleb Reschar put the pressure on Jenings as they ran side by side and wow, here came Reschar to steal the lead out of turn four for the win with Jennings second and Barnette third.

When the sport stocks hit the track for their 25 lap feature it was John Haney and Ray Muncy on the front row to face the green flag. Muncy took the lead with Ron Lewis moving up on the outside of Haney but it was fast timer Shawn Stansell taking the second spot as Lewis faded. Points leader James harding was running fourth behid Haney and here came Jamie Sites to take third as Stansell stole the lead. Muncy held second with Sites third with Harding trying to figure a way to catch Haney when the pace was slowed when Chris boggs spun on turn four.

Stansell continued to set the pace after the resstart while a battle developed for fourth between Haney, Harding and Lewis with five laps to go. Stansell and his Affordable Auto Parts special claimed their third feature of the year as Ray Muncy, Jamie Sites, John Haney and James harding in that order.

Rodney Terry and Paul Holley started on the front row of the compact feature as they diced side by side for the lead with Bo Hoelscher, Joe Hoelscher and fast timer Bryan Lynch all dogging for positions. Slowing the pace was a caution on lap five when two cars tangled.

Paul Holley had the lead on the restart as Rodney Terry had his hands full holding off the challenges of the Hoelscher's. Joe slipped on the inside of Holley on lap ten to take the lead as he pulled away from the field. Bo held second with Bryan Lynch right behind him when Joe tangled momentarily with a slow car giving the lead to Lynch with but Joe Hoelscher ended up second and Bo Hoelscher third. Pau Holley was fourth with Rodney Terry fifth for a wild finish.

Tyer Mahaffey sat on the pole of the compact first heat with Rodney Terry alonside with rookie Mahaffey setting sail into the lead. Paul Holley inherrited second when Terry departed with mechanical woes with fast timer Bryan Lynch trying for second but it was Holley hanging on to second sport as Mahaffey scored the heat win.

The second heat had Steve Barnhart and Davey Shaw in the front row as they went three wide into turn one with Shaw hoding the lead on the first lap. Bradleu Adkins tried to move up on the front runners but went wide on turn four dropping back to the tail. rookie Michael brewer had passed Shaw for the lead as he wite flag came out and claimed the win with Shaw second and Dewayne Snyder Jr. third.

The trailer race of destruction rounded out the nights activity with ten crazy vehicles running on the figure-8 track towing trailers with a variety of items with debris flying everywhere. When it was finally over it was a tie between Trey Edwards and Nicholas Meade.

Next Friday night, July 30, the FAST Legend Cars will join th NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models, modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.

Henes MSA master at Kil Kare, Stevens, Liquori, Carroll also Score

By Todd Ridgeway & Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (7/16) – It was a nearly packed house for the yearly visit of the open wheel cars as Kil-Kare Speedway presented Open Wheel Friday with the MAS supermodifieds, Buckeye Super Sprints, USAC Ford Focus Midgets, and the Kil-Kare modifieds. When the final checkers were waved it was Jon Henes, Talon Stevens, Joe Liguori, and Mike Carroll taking home the top money with feature wins.

A first time visit to a new playground for MAS turned fun for Jon Henes as he became the first repeat winner on the tour in 2010. Henes took his No. 36 family owned Supermodified to the front, battled all challengers, and hung on to get his second seasons victory on the 2010 Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) campaign. Those challengers drove hard and fast lap after lap gunning for the determined veteran leader. It was the first time the MSA had ever visited Kil Kare Speedway in Xenia Ohio and 15 cars would take the green flag for the 30 lap feature race.

Randy Burch and Henes would bring the 15 car field to the drop of the green for the start only to see the caution fly before the first lap could be completed when Bobby Dawson spun in turn one scattering the field. In the confusion fast qualifier Charlie Schultz had some contact which caused front end damage ending his night before one lap could be scored. Realigned and in formation the field would once again take the start only to see another yellow flag before the first lap was in the books. This time it was a whole may lay of cars spinning on the back stretch ending with Matt Palmer against the outside wall ending his night. The third time was a charm as the field raced through the first lap with Henes getting to the point. Henes tried to stretch the lead out setting a blistering pace but the Stout team cars of Trent Stephens and Liquid Lou Cicconi would have nothing to do with it. Cicconi and Stephens both where coming fast from their eighth and tenth starting positions and by lap 15 were bearing down on the Henes 36. Tim Ice was also on the move swinging through cars and coming to the front in his May Motorsports No. 77 entree. At lap 20 Stephens would spin and a yellow flag was displayed. Coming to the restart with just ten laps to go it was Henes, Cicconi, and Ice. When the green dropped Cicconi instantly went to the inside and blasted past Henes under the flag stand to nab the lead for the first time. As fate would have it the yellow would once again be displayed as the new leader developed problems. Getting a push back to the pit area Cicconi’s night came to an end with a broken race car after leading just one lap. Giving the lead back to Henes the field would move into the final laps as Ice would now go to work. Ice would go the outside and challenge for a couple laps pushing his red racer a nose in front. However, Henes maintained the preferred line and was able to muscle the lead away from Ice as the two made contact and raced very close. At the checkered flag it was Henes over Ice, with Stephens coming from the tail to regain a third place finish followed by Gene Lee Gibson fourth and Denny Fisher rounding out the top five. Dawson was sixth, Rich Reid seventh, Cicconi settled for eighth, Brandon Fisher ninth, and Burch rounded out the top ten. The race was slowed by five cautions and heat winners included Schultz and Denny Fisher. Schultz set fast time with a lap of 11.136.

“We showed up here and never been here before,” stated Henes. “It’s a neat little track, and I knew the first time I got on it I’d like it. I couldn’t figure it out but, I knew once I did figure it out I would be ok. It was just getting seat time and finding a groove I was comfortable in. We really didn’t adjust the car all day. I told the guys earlier today I am not going fast enough to adjust the car, I can’t tell you what it is doing. We are not going fast enough to make it push or make it loose. We just thought we might hang around get a top five out of it and have a decent point’s night, put a little money in our pocket. It couldn’t have turned out any better. We got as much money in our whole car as ninety percent of these guys have in their engine.

We put one tire on all day; the old tires just seemed to work out good. We didn’t want to spend a bunch of money and the right rear worked out good,” concluded the race winner.

Runner up Ice raced hard but for the second race in a row he came up just a little short. “I just missed all that stuff on those couple starts and just couldn’t get going very good,” noted Ice. “Once I got going the car was really good. I got to the outside of Henes for the lead two or three times and down the backstretch with just two or three laps to go his car quit and just hesitated, I hit him bending up my wing. Then I got tight in the front, I got up beside him all the way down the backstretch and he got up into me in the corner, I just couldn’t clear him. But, good job for everybody, it was great, we had a good car all day,” finished Ice.

“I had a real fast car, I know that,” said Stephens. “I started in the back and got all the way up to third battling my teammate on the outside for second and then just lost it. I think I just got the rear tires to hot and it just spun on me. So, I came back up through and I just lost the right rear. I was just driving it too hard for to long. Tim and Jon where going at it, I seen them up there hit each other a couple times. All in all a good night it’s all in one piece,” finished third place Stephens.

The USAC Ford Focus Midgets were well represented with nineteen cars starting the thirty lap feature event with former Legends car driver Toby Alfrey and Andy Nock setting the pace. Alfrey took the lead leaving Nock and fourth place starter Jake Blackhurst to battle for third while Joe Liguori held second. Nock nosed ahead of Blackhurst on lap four but the determined Blackhurst continued to nock on Nock’s rear bumper.

Liguori appeared to be a man on a mission as he closed in on leader Alfrey but Alfrey’s luck ceased on lap twenty when he had to drop out with problems with his machine. For the grandson of the well known driver Ralph Liguori it was a blessing in disguise as he inherited the lead to hold it all the way to the checker to claim his first Kil-Kare win. Blackhurst wasn’t far behind in second with Kyle Hamilton third while new track record holder Scotty Hunter (13.458) was fourth and Kyle O’Gara, brother-in-law to IRL driver Saraha Fisher was fifth.

Heat wins went to Tyler Cottingim, Nick Drake, Justin Hummel.

When the Buckeye Super Sprints hit the track the night could have well be named “Talon Stevens Night” as he definitely ruled with fast time, heat win, and then put the icing on the cake with the feature win. The feature no more than received the green flag when action was halted when Tommy Kunz came to a quick stop on turn two after losing fluid on the track which pitted him as well as Kevin Shirey.

Cody Gallogly enjoyed the lead the first few laps but Mike McVetta unseated him only to suffer mechanical problems on lap nine which dropped him from further competition. Second running Gallogly now had the front spot back but fast timer Talon Stevens was coming on strong and zipped past for the lead on lap eighteen which he held to the checker. Mike Shepeard was second with Gallogly third followed by Ryan Gillenwater, and Joey Weicoff. Heat winners were Stevens and Weicoff.

When the Kil-Kare modifieds hit the track it was rookie Brandon Oakley and Jason Mahaffey in the front row but Oakley’s machine dropped liquid on the track just after the green appeared causing a mix-up of cars. Oakley was sent to the back of the pack which moved Steve Foster up  who took the lead and was enjoying the front spot until the timing clock caught him well under his qualifying time which sent him to the tail. Jerry Stapleton was now in command with Mike Carroll and Mahaffey right behind as Carroll moved to the outside of Stapleton as they ran wheel to wheel for the lead. Carroll in his McDonald’s special finally took the front spot and sailed to his second win of the year. Stapleton was second with Derek Barnette third, Jason Mahaffey fourth, and Brian Reeser fifth. Brad Williams was fast timer at 13.958.

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH - When Friday night rolls around and Kil-Kare Speedway presents their popular "Open Wheel Friday" events a new type of race car will invade the three-eights mile asphalt track. For the first time the 800 plus horsepower off-set engine winged super modifieds of the Midwest Supermodified Association will be added to the program.
While most fans are use to the weekly modifieds with their engine set in the center of the chassis the supers have theirs what you might say straddling the left side of the chassis.
Several names familiar to the KIl-Kare fans just might be Zach Gibson who currently holds the track record as the fastest driver ever at Kil-Kare with a time of 11.162 which he recorded in a sprint car in 2008. Also known for his appearances in the super late models will be the well known "Iceman", better known as Tim Ice.
Also on the program which does not include any stock cars will be the Buckeye Super Sprints, USAC Ford Focus Midgets, and the open wheel modifieds.

Kil-Kare Championships Go To Mahaffey, Carroll, Sites and Hoelscher

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. (7/2) - Kil-Kare Speedway celebrated the 4th of July Friday with the running of championship events for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. And when the final checkers fell it was Don Mahaffey, Mike Carroll, Jamie Sites and Bo Hoelscher claiming the wins.

With forty laps to go in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sonic Drive-In late model feature it was former track champ Russ Bobb on the pole with Virgil Powell  alongside. As the green waved it was a rough start as Bobb bobbled on turn four with cars shuffling with Powell spinning on turn one. With a complete restart in store Bobb took command but Powell rebounded to take the front spot on the second lap with Bobby Justus and Terry Scherz running side by side for third followed by Mike Stacy. Side by side the first two ran with Justus taking second and then went after Powell with fast timer Don Mahaffey taking second as the caution came out to check the track when Justus scraped the wall and dropped out on lap ten.

On the restart Powell suffered mechanical woes dropping back to the rear for the restart. This put the Oakley Blacktop cars of fast timer Don Mahaffey out frot with teammate Mike Stacy following. The real battle was for third with former champ Sam Heckman taking third with Bobb fourth and Scherz fifth with Jeff Marsh riding sixth.

Stacy closed in on the rapid moving Mahaffey as they began to lap cars and Scherz pulled alongside of Bobb dicing for fourth. Heckman held third with Mahaffey putting Heckman down a lap with five laps to go as the laps wound down. Mahaffey clamed his sixth win of the year with Stacy second and Heckman third. Russ Bobb came home fourth and Scherz fifth.

Third generation driver Shawn Stansell and veteran Jerry Stapleton paced the field for the forty lap modified feature. Side by  side they went and when they hit the line on the first lap it was Stansell in the lead. Mike carroll worked from fifth to challenge Stapleton and took second on lap five. Ray Muncy rode fourth but right behind him was Ryan fleming and fast timer Greg Stapleton.

Jerry Stapleton regained the second spot from Carroll as they came up on slower traffic with Stansell still out front. Like a rocket rookie Ryan Fleming came from sixth to take third as Carroll dropped to fourth. The first four cars were now running bumper to bumper  as they tried to figure a way around leader Stansell. Greg Stapleton began to fade as Brandon Oakley passed him for fifth when the caution came out as there was contact between leader Stansell and Jerry Stapleton with thirteen laps to go and Stapleton sent to the rear.

On the restart it was Stansell, Fleming, Carroll, Oakley, and Greg Stapleton the top five with a battle for second as carroll tried the outside of fleming making his pass good on lap thirty two and then passed Stansell on lap later for the lead dropping Stansell to second. Carroll then put some distance on the field with a battle between Stansell and Fleming with one lap to go as Carroll took the win in his McDonald's special with Stansell second. Oakley slipped by Fleming at the line to steal third with Fleming fourth and Greg Stapleton fifth.

The modifieds ran ten lap heat races however the first one was unfortunate for Jason Mahaffey as Mahaffey made hard contact with the turn one wall resulting in heavy damage to the Paul Storer owned car. Shawn Stansell brought his Dayton Steel Door machine home the winner followed by Brian Reeser, Darrel Skaggs, and Greg Stapleton.

Mike Carroll claimed the second heat as he outclassed Jerry Stapleton, Ryan Fleming, and Joe Jennings in that order.

Forty laps was in order for the sport stocks with John Haney and second generation driver Jay Lakins Jr. in the front row with Lakins the leader on the first lap. Haney held on to second with Ed Loretz third and challenged by Jamie Sites for third. Behind them fast timer Shawn Stansell was working his way up. Lakins continued to hold the front spot but Haney was right on his bumper with Sites trying to get around Lorentz which he did and then riding on the outside he pulled up on Haney. Seven cars all bunched together jockeyed for spots with Lorentz regaining third with Stansell on the inside of Sites for fourth. Again Sites tried to regain third as he ran alongside of Lorentz with Lakins still in command.

The first caution appeared on lap twenty seven when Haney spun on the frontstretch with Haney dropping to the rear. This put Sites in second but here came Stansell on the outside to challenge for third with Lorentz and James Harding now in the fight for position. Lakins had his hands full holding off sites with Lorentz right on Lakins rear bumper. Sites made his pass good with five laps to go with Stansell seeing Lorentz slip by him as they fought for third in a great battle. Sites now had a good lead and went on to claim his first feature of the year in his Commercial Roofing machine with Lakins a hard earned second followed by Stansell, Harding, and Chris boggs.

Leading the pack in the championship for the compacts was rookie and third generation driver Michael Brewer and Davey Shaw in the front row for the twenty five lap event. Shaw on the outside took the lead but it was short lived as Paul Holley stopped on the backstretch with a broken axle calling for a restart. Shaw again shot ito the lead with Brewer second with Joshua  Spriggs surging around Brewer for second. On the move was seventh place starter Bob Hoelscher who was up to third by lap six with his dad Joe giving him a run for the spot. Fast timer Bryan Lynch joined the top four while Bo Hoelscher nudged around leader Shaw to take the top spot.

Bo pulled away from field with the caution coming out on lap fourteen when fifth place running Lynch spun on turns three and four bring the yellow out and the field bunched up. On the restart Joe Hoelscher went to work on Shaw as he tried the outside lane to take the second spot and then set his sights on leader Bo. A battle shaped up for third when Joshua Spriggs ttook third place and was challenged by Lynch who made his pass good. taking the checker for the third time this year was Bo Hoelscher followed by father Joe Hoelscher, Bryan Lynch, Joshua Spriggs, and Tim Spriggs.

It will be the usual regular program Friday, July 9, with the IKO Mini Cups added to the program and coming up on July 16 will be the popular Open-Wheel Friday with gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m. both dates.

Mahaffey, Stapleton, Stansell, and Hoelscher Rule Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. - As they say a full moon usually causes problems and that was certainly the case Driday night at Kil-Kare Speedway as there was a bundle of caution periods and crashed race cars. When evverything settled down for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events it was Don Mahaffey, Greg Stapleton, Shawn Stansell and Bo Hoelscher taking the feature wins.

Starting the nights action was the compacts with rookie Michael Brewer sitting on the pole and David Sagers alongside. Brewer jumped out front with David Sagers running second while Davey Shaw held third. Battling side by side behind them was Bo Hoelscher and Joe Holescherr with Bo sliding around Shaw on lap six. Brewer continued to set the pace as the field closed the gap on the leader. Bo shot to the outside of Brewer on lap eleven to steal the lead as dad Joe Hoelscher moved into second followed by Bryan Lynch  who took third only to see the caution come out when he and Brewer made contact and Lynch spun.

With Bo Hoelscher in the lead when the green reappeared it was shaping up for a showdown between son and father as son Bo lead father Joe as they moved side by side to the checker and it was Bo taking his second win of the year with Joe Hoelscher second and a very close third was Bryan Lynch with David Sagers ffourth and fifth was Paul Holley.

In the open-wheeled modifieds Caleb Rescher and rookie Brandon Oakley were in the front row for their thirty lap feature. Reschar beat the rookie into turn one to lead as Shawn Stansell moved to the inside of Oakley to battle for second. Jason Mahaffey was glued to the rear of the two when there was contact between Jerry Stapleton and Ralph Harrod with Harrod smacking the wall with flames shooting from the engine which quickly went out and put Harrod out for the night.

The green flew again with three laps completed and Jason Mahaffey moving up to challenge Oakley for third with eight time fast timer Greg Stapleton riding fifth. Only six more laps were completed when Jack Jones and Derek Barnette made contact on turn four bringing out the caution for the second time with Barnette sent to the trailer with y damage.

Again Mahaffey went to work on Oakley after the restart to take third with Stapleton also challenging Oakley only to have the third caution come out when second place running Shawn Stansell spun on the frontstretch after being tapped by Oakley. Reschar held the lead on the restart but Stansell was reeling him in but here came Stapleton passing Mahaffey for third and then pulled alongside of Stansell dropping him to third. Next for Stapleton was Reschar who he passed with five laps to go and pulled away. Reschar had his hands full as Mahaffey and Stansell were looking for a way around Reschar when Stansell bumped and spun Reschar for the fourth caution which put Stansell on the tail.

Ryan Fleming now joined the front runnerrs riding fourth as Stapleton claimed his fourth feature in his Terry's Radiator Service special with Reschar second followed by Mahaffey, Fleming and Jack Jones.

The  NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sonic Drive-In feature it was visiting Bob Sibila Jr and former champ Gary Estes in the front row as they diced side by side into turn one with Estes taking ehe lead with Sam Heckman in second. But here came seventh place starter and fast timer Don Mahaffey to take the lead on lap five. Estes held second but here came Mahaffey's teammate Mike Stacy to challenge Estes for second. Heckman held fourth but Sloan Henderson rode on the outside of him to steal the spot on lap ten.

Mahaffey pulled way ahead of the field as Stacy tried to catch him and Mahaffey began to lap the field at the halfway mark. Mahaffey continued to set sail putting him almost a half lap ahead of second running Stacy. When the checker waved it was Mahaffey staking claim to his fourth feature win in his Oakley Blacktop special with four time winner Mike Stacy second with Sloan Henderson third followed by Bob Sibila and Sam Heckman.

It was evident earlier in the evening that there was a full moon during sport stock hot laps as three cars were eliminated when one car blew an engine oiling the track and two cars smacked the outside wall

Rounding out the night was the sport stocks with second generation driver Jay Lakins Jr. on the pole with John Haney on the outside. Before a lap could be completed David Boyle suffered mechanical problems as he came to a halt on turn four.

Lakins took the lead at the drop of the green with Haney riding second with James Harding on the move on the outside to chase leader Lakins with fast timer Shawn Stansell following him as the front cars batled for positions. Two time winner Harding was challenged every lap by Stansell with Stansell moving up on the outside to run side by side but Harding kept shaking him off as the laps ran down. Who will it be to the stripe was anybody's guess as they diced back and forth. Harding slipped a little on turn four with five laps to go which saw Stansell take the lead. Meanwhile Jamie Sites passed Lakins for third  as the white flag waved. Stansell was home first to claim his  second feature win in his Affordable Auto Parts sponsored car. Harding was second with Sites third, Lakins fourth, and Haney fifth.

Kil-Kare will celebrate the 4th of July with championship events in all the weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.

Stacy Claims Third Feature at Kil-Kare

 by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. (6/18) - A good crowd was on hand on a hot Friday night to witness the NASCAR Whelen all-American Series events with the IOFS figure-8 cars a highlight of the night and Mike Stacy claimed his third feature win of the season.

The first event of the night was the sport stock feature with two time fast qualifier Travis Digges and Jamie sites in the front row. Digges got the jump as Ron Lewis displaced Sites for third with fast timer James Harding taking third and then went to work on the outside of Lewis. Digges enjoyed a decent lead as Harding kept trying to figure out Lewis' line while on the move was fifth place starter Chris Boggs held fourth with last weeks winner Shawn Stansell glued to his rear bumper.

A caution flew when David Boyle stopped on the frontstretch giving the field a chance to bunch up on leader Digges. Sites, who had fallen back in the pack all of a sudden made a hard drive to catch the leaders but his luck ran out on lap fifteen when he dropped off the pace and off the track. Meanwhile Stansell was creeping forward as still the top the three ran almost bumper to bumper.

Digges and his Valley Auto Parts machine had his sights on his first win of the year as he held off Lewis and Harding to the checker to finish in that order. Stansell was home fourth and Jay Laykins Jr. fifth.

Two time feature winner Joe Hoelscher and one time winner Bryan Lynch set the pace for the twenty lap compact feature. Hoelscher shot into the lead with rookie Tyler Mahaffey into second with Lynch third and former champ and fast timer Tim Haerr riding fourth. Lynch challenged Mahaffey and succeeded to take second with Haerr third and Mahaffey fourth with Bo Hoelscher fourth when the caution came out when Bradley Adkins spun.

Bo Hoelscher stole fourth from Mahaffey on the restart while up front tim Haerr was charging on the outside of Lynch trying to make a pass. As they lapped traffic Bo was able to move up behind Haerr as Joe Hoelscher some how was able to pull away from the field. As laps wound down Haerr was challenging Joe and Bo stole third  from Lynch in an exciting finish. It was win number three for Joe Hoelscher in his Phil's Body Shop machine with the finish Haerr second followed by Bo Hoelscher, Bryan Lynch, and Paul Holley.

Hitting the track for the Sonic Drive-In late models with two time feature winner Mike Stacy on the pole with former track champ Sam Heckman alongside.Heckman  had the edge on the start but Stacy showed as the leader on the second lap as the yellow flew when Don Mahaffey and Jeff Marsh tangled.

Reverting back to the first lap Heckman was back in front but Stacy made that short lived as he took the front spot with teammate Mahaffey taking second, Heckman third with Sloan Henderson fourth and Gary Estes fifth. Again the action was slowed when Andy Peterson smacked the frontstretch wall with heavy front end damage.

Henderson shot on the inside of Mahaffey on the restart and then went to the outside of Heckman to take second and then set her eyeballs on leader Stacy. Mahaffey saw his chance for another win go down the drain when he departed with a flat tire which now put Henderson right behind Stacy as Estes took third from Heckman.

Seventeen year old Henderson put the pressure on veteran Stacy as she tried the outside only to overdrive in to turn four and spun which put her on the tail end. Now Estes went to work on leader Stacy as Henderson was charging back, passing BobSibla sibilia for fourth and then Heckman for third as the leaders lapped traffic.

For Stacy it was his third win of the year as he took the checker in his Oakley Blacktop special followed closely by Gary Estes, Sloan Henderson, Sam Heckman, and Bob Sibila.

Travis Braden and Brian Reeser started on the front row of the modified feature which saw the caution fly right away after the green when Brandon Oakley spun. former legend car driver Braden took the lead followed by rookie and one time winner Ryan Fleming who was with behind the leader with fast timer greg stapleton riding third and closing in on the leaders. The field was slowed again on lap eight giving the field a chance to bunch up. Stapleton was on the move as he took second and then went after leader Braden.

At the halfway marker Stapleton moved to the outside of braden but Braden shook him off as young Fleming rode right behind them. Last weeks winner Jack Jones was running fourth with Jerry Stapleton running fifth. Braden did a good job holding off Stapleton as the laps ran down as he was looking for his first modified win only to see the caution appear with five laps to go. Side by side they went on the last lap with Stapleton nipping Braden for the win which was his third in the Underwood Vinyl and Tile special. With Braden second it was Fleming, Jones, and Jerry Stapleton rounding out the top five.

The International Outlaw Figure Eight Series made their first ever appearance  at Kil-Kare with thirteen  IOFS cars seeing action plus four Kil-Kare cars on the figure-8 track. Corey Turner and Gary Bedell sat on the front row for their fifty lap feature. Turner took the lead followed by Bedell but it was Bedell taking charge with turner second and fast timer Rich Fenwick riding third. Charlie Hargraves ride fourth as the cars weaved through the X. At the halfway marker the running order was still the same with Fenwick putting the pressure on second place running turner. bedell was realy flying around the track as he lapped car after car.

After a restart Fenwick took second spot from turner and then dogged leader Bedell. At the checker it was Bedell in the Oakley blacktop car taking the win in a hard fought battle with Fenwick who was a close second.

Figure-8 Cars Highlight Kil-Kare Program

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. (6/14) - It will be a bit unusual in the racing program Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway as the Figure-8 track will see plenty of action when the International Outlaw Figure-8 Series makes a stop at the Greene county facility. The high powered exotic specially built Figure-8 cars will thrill the fans as they maneuver the tight race course hoping not to collide with an opponent as they sail through the intersection.

To make it a complete night of activity the regular weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sonic Drive-In late models,
modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts will have their usual events.

Dayton's Don Mahaffey has proven to be the late model driver to beat so far this year having captured four out of the six feature events held thus far this season. Mahaffey made a tremendous drive from the rear of the field to take the win last week over teammate Mike Stacy who has recorded the other two feature wins.

Beavercreek's modified driver Jack Jones would like to match his performance of last season when he scored four feature wins as he picked up win number one this year last Friday.

Defending sport stock champ Shawn Stansell of Kettering ruled that division last season with five feature wins but thus far this year has only one to his credit, that coming last week.

Xenia's Joe Hoelscher is the only two time feature winner this year in the compact division picking up his second win last week after a torrid battle with his son Bo for the lead.

Kil-Kare Speedway would be the perfect place to take dad in celebration of Fathers Day for a special treat and fun filled night. Spectator gates open at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.

Kil-Kare Features go to Mahaffey,Jones, Hoelscher, Stansell

 by: Jery Wahl

Xenia, OH (6/11) - The weatherman may have called for rain around the area but Kil-Kare Speedway was fortunate it stayed dry and the fans were treated to a full night of activity featuring the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models, modifieds, sport stocks, compacts, and IKO Mini cup cars on a warm humid night.

The Sonic Drive-In late models saw Tony Brunke and Gary Estes in the front row for their thirty lap feature and when the green flew it wa side by side into turn one and on lap two Estes took the lead  with Brunke in second and Jeff Marsh and on the prowl was Mike Stacy and Don Mahaffey as they chased Heckman for fourth. Stacy made his move around Heckman on lap eight and then passed Brunke for second with Mahaffey in tow. Sloan Henderson was on the move from her seventh place starting slot as she disposed of Brunke on lap thirteen  for fourth. Meanwhile up front it was Stacy's #90 about to claim the front spot when Henderson and Jeff Marsh tangled on turn two causing a caution.

Henderson got her fourth place spot back as Marsh went to the tail for the restart and now the pressure was on Estes again as here came Stacy on the outside but there was contact between Estes and Mahaffey who was right behind Estes, bringing out the caution again. Unfortunately Estes was parked with mechanical problems giving Stacy the lead, Mahaffey on the tail and Henderson now in second. Mahaffey was making a charge to the front from the tail as by lap eighteen he was third  and was chasing down the two front runners. On lap twenty three Mahaffey moved beside Henderson  but Henderson gave him a good battle. Mahaffey was hungry as he tried to catch Stacy with Sloan third. Side by side for the win they came to the checker as the Oakley Blacktop machine just nipped Stacy for his fourth win of the year as he ame from the tail for the hard earned win. With Stacy second it was Sloan Henderson, Tony Brunke, and Sam Heckman for a very fan pleasing feature event.

Sixteen modifieds faced the green flag for their thirty lap feature with Jack Jones and Brandon Oakley in the front row. Joes quickly displaced rookie Oakley for the lead followed by Jason Mahaffey and Mike Carroll with fast timer Greg Stapleton fourth followed by rookie Ryan Fleming. Stapleton began to size up Carroll as he tried to figure a way to pass the former track champ. Jones continued to lead as smoke rolled from his car through the turns as previous weeks winner Ralph Harrod and Brian Reeser had a side by side battle for seventh as they ran wheel to wheel. By the halfway point it was six cars running very close in the front with Jones still in command.

The caution flew on lap eighteen to check the smoking problem with leader Jack Jones as it appeared he had an oil leak which apparently was not the cause of the smoke and Jones resumed the front spot. Jones pulled away from the field on the restart leaving Mahaffey, Carroll and Stapleton to battle for second which they did with Carroll trying the outside of Mahaffey to no avail. At the white flag Stapleton made an outside move on Carroll but time ran out as Jones, a four time feature winner last season took the win in his Reeser Sign sponsored car with Mahaffey second, Carroll third, Stapleton fourth, and Brandon Oakley fifth.

Jamie Sites jumped into the lead in the twenty lap sport stock feature with outside front row starter John Haney in second as Shawn Stansell moved up to challenge Haney for second when the caution came out when David Boyle spun on the backstretch. Again Sites held the front spot on the restart as again the yellow flew when Jay Lakins Jr., and Chris Harshbarger tangled on turn four. Sites again held the front spot as Joe Hensel spun on the frontstretch but came right back into action. A battle was developing between Haney and Stansell when Boyle again caused a caution when he spun on the backstretch and a car to keep an eye on was fast timer James Harding who was creeping toward the front.

With fourteen laps to go Sites had his site set on winning his first feature of the year but Shawn Stansell came on strong to pass Haney as Harding slipped under Travis Digges for fifth and then went to work on Chris Boggs. Stansell was knocking on the rear bumper of Sites while Harding passed Boggs for fourth with Haney in his sights. Lap fifteen saw Sites hope of a win go away as Stansell took the lead and again Harding challenged Haney with Travis Digges loosing conrol on turn two as he spun bringing out the caution.

With three laps to go there was some jostling among the cars with James Harding finally spinning on the backstretch dropping him back to eighth. Stansell, in pursuit of his first feature win of the year enjoyed the lead on the restart as Sites held down second with Haney third, Digges fourth and Harding challenging Boggs for fifth and then Digges for fourth. Stansell in his Affordable Auto Parts special did claim his win he was looking for as Sites was second trailed by John Haney, James Harding, and Travis Digges.

Bradley Adkins and Tyler Mahaffey set the pace to the green in the compact feature as Adkins edged Mahaffey for the lead and  then here came Paul Holley and Bo Hoelscher charging to the front. Adkins lead only lasted three laps as he broke out on his qualifying time which put Holley in the lead for the restart. Joining the two front runners was Joe Hoelscher with Bryan Lynch running right with them. Bo Hoelscher took the front spot on lap six with father Joe running second as Lynch dropped to fourth. What a battle it was between the Hoelscher's as Bo led but dad Joe who pulled alongside of Bo with Joe in the lead on lap twelve. The yellow slowed the pace when Steve Barnhart smacked the frontstetch wall.

Seven laps remained on the restart as Joe Hoelscher put the pedal to the medal to enjoy a three car lead but bo closed in on him as Lynch was looking at Bo's rear bumper. At the checker it was the Paul's body Shop special of Joe Hoelscher claiming his second feature of the year with son Bo home second and Bryan Lynch third followed by Paul Holley and Joshua Spriggs.

Corey Dueser and Brad Stiffler led the field in the IKO Mini Cup fifteen lap feature. Stiffler wasted little time in jumping into the lead with fast timer Matthew Lorrane running second and reelin in Stiffler. By lap six Lorance was on Stiffler's rear bumper only to see the caution fly as Jacob Bartellis stopped on the frontstretch. Stiffler continued to set the pace as Joey Greening held the third spot. Back in the field Amanda Harrison and Jacob McClay diced side by side for fifth with Harrison taking the point.

Stiffler made it two wins in a row at Kil-Kare this year as he led Lorance, Greening, Dueser, and Harrison to the checker.

Five IKO rookie drivers faced the green flag for their feature with Jacob Bartellis and Jacob Wencick darted into the lead with Jacob McClay running second and lady driver Amanda Harris in third as they ran their ten lap feature and that is the way it was at the finish with Bartelli fourth.

Young fans enjoyed the night as it was the annual race car rides for kids night as they had the pleasure of making a few laps with the various drivers which is always a highlight for them.

It will be Figure-8 racing at its best Friday night, June 18, when the International Outlaw Figure-8 Series invade the figure-8 track along with the NASCAR Sonic Drive-In late models, modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.

Mike Stacy Claims Kil-Kare Main Event

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (6/4) - The powerful Super Late Models of the Main Event Racing Series (MERS) made their annual visit to Kil-Kare Speedway Friday with Mike Stacy claiming the 100 lap $2500 to win event sponsored by Carter Lumber.

With an eight car inversion Charlie Schultz and many time Kil-Kare track champion Dick Dunlevy started alongside of Schultz as they paced  the twenty five car field to the green flag.

Shultz got the jump to take the lead over Dunlevy as the first caution flew on ap one when Shawn Stroble spun on turn two. Fate struck former MERS champion Tim Ice when he suffered heavy frontend damage to his car on lap three as several cars tangled on turn two.

Dunlevy moved up on Schultz's rear bumper on the restart followed closely by Harold Fair, Mike Stacy, and Drew Charleston as again the caution flew when Gary Whipkey slowed. Schultz pulled away from Dunlevy on the restart with Dunlevy trying to figure out a way to catch the leader as fourth place running and track record holder Mike stacy took third place and then began to reel in Dunlevy as Whipkey departed to the its. Stacy made his pass good on lap nineteen as Stacy made a daring move on lap twenty one to steal the lead followed by Dunlevy, Fair and Charleston as former leader Schultz deopped to fifth.

Stacy held the lead while Fair dropped Dunlevy to third when he stole second as the field was slowed on lap thirty when Brian Short spun on turn two which seemed to be a problem spot for the drivers.

Stacy was leading in his Oakley Blacktop machine but Fair was coming on strong to move up on Stacy's bumper. Behind them Donnie Hill was advancing as he moved into the top five when Matt Parsons brought the caution out when he brushed the front stretch wall.

Misfortune struck former leader Charlie Schultz on lap forth two when he made contact with the front stretch wall which pitted him, making it a rough night for the Fast Racing Engines cars.

Turn four seemed to have taken over as the trouble spot as three cars spun on lap forty four which saw the yellow flag fly for the sixth time. Three laps later John Flynn slowed on the front stretch for another caution which saw him drop out of action.

So far Stacy had enjoyed the lead but still Fair was in the hunt with Dunlevy still in third and Charleston fourth with Hill fifth and that was the running order at the halfway mark. Charleston was giving Dunlevy fits as he tried to sneak his mount on the inside of Dunlevy but Dunlevy held tight to his third place spot. Don Harvey's night ended on lap fifty six when he made contact with the outside wall to again slow the field.

After the top four running cars it was a tight fit battle with Hill, Jimmy Carter, Don Mahaffey, and Paul Pelletier in a tight knit group. The caution flew on lap sixty nine when Brian Short spun into the infield and second place running  Harold Fair departed to the pits which put Dunlevy in second and Charleston third with Hill fourth and points leader Jimmy Carter  fifth.

Stacy poured the power to his mount on the restart as he pulled away from Dunlevy who was still fighting off the challenges of Charleston but the challenge soon ended when they tangled coming out of turn four with Charleston hitting the wall headon by the flagstand and Dunlevy sliding to the infield. Unfortunately both cars were knocked out of action.

Stacy now had former Columbus Motor Speedway track champ on his rear bumper for the restart with Carter, Mahaffey and Pelletier the top five with twenty five remaining. The green just flew again but was short lived as John Flynn spun with apparent mechanical problems as he headed for the pits. Stacy again set sail on the restart, pulling away from the field and here came Flynn to join the field after quick repairs.

With ten laps to go Stacy enjoyed nearly a quarter lap advantage over Hill as the laps wound down and when the checker flew it was Mike Stacy claiming his third MERS win at Kil-Kare. Donnie Hill claimed second place money with third going to Jimmy Carter, Don Mahaffey, and Paul Pelletier.

Fast Qualifier: Jimmy Carter 12.610

Carter Lumber 100 lap feature: Mike Stacy, Donnie Hill, Jimmy Carter, Don Mahaffey, Paul Pelletier, Justin Schroeder, Jamie Hunt, Josh Smith, Brock Coyer, Brian Short, Matthew Parsons, Charlie Schultz, Burgess White, John Flynn, Dick Dunlevy, Drew Baker, Harod Fair, Lou ciconi, Don Harvey, Jeremy Dennis, Gary Whipkey, Jim Lewis, Shawn Stroble, Tim Ice

Hoelscher, Harrod, Lewis Score at Kil-Kare

by Jerrry Wahl

Xenia, OH (6/4) -  The Main Event Racing Series paid a visit to Kil-Kare Friday night for an exciting event but in the regular divisions it was Bo Hoelscher, Ralph Harrod, and Ron Lewis   claiming feature wins.

The always exciting compacts were first to hit the track for their twenty lap feature which saw newcomers Rodney Terry on the pole with Robbie Smith alongside.

Terry took the lead but unfortunately Smith went high on the backstretch and slid off the track calling for a complete restart. Terry again shot into the lead but Bo Hoelscher had his sights set on Terry as he went into second spot. Meanwhile his father Joe Hoelscher was coming on strong while son Bo Hoelscher stole the lead on lap four from Terry. Joe claimed second but a mechanical failure parked him but after quick repair he returned to restart on the tail end.

Bo Hoelscher continued to stretch out his lead as a major traffic pile-up occurred on lap eight bringing out the caution. Hoelscher again started to put some over the field. With twelve laps to go Bo Hoelscher now had a hungry pack behind him when the field was slowed again by a caution. On the restart

Hoelscher weeded his way through traffic with another yellow flying when two cars tangled on turn two. On the restart Hoelscher stayed in front to the checker with Terry home second followed by Bryon Bivens as Troy Patterson nosed past Michael Gills for fourth with Gills fifth.

A good field of modifieds faced starter Mike Stapleton's green flag with Ralph Harrod and Caleb Rescher leading the field. Side by side they went at the drop of the green with former champ Mike Carroll third and rookie Ryan Fleming fourth. Harrod finally shook loose of Reschar and pulled away somewhat over Reschar and Carroll who were battling for second. Fast timer and legend car driver Travis Braden  was right behind Fleming as he started to put the pressure on Fleming when the caution came out slowing the field with eight laps in the record book.

Braden bobbled on turn two as he slipped back to fifth as Carroll and Fleming were watching the rear of Reschar's mount with Carroll darting under Reschar and did make the pass good. Meanwhile Braden had caught up with fleming who was riding fourth. Brandon Oakley brought out the caution for the second time as he spun on turn two bunching up the field on leader Harrod.

Twelve laps remained when the green reappeared and here came Carroll to the outside of Harrod but Harrod didn't give as he shook Carroll off. Again Carroll tried Harrod on lap twenty two as he diced side by side with Harrod. Back in the pack Brian Reeser was coming on strong as he moved up to fifth. On the white flag Harrod had his hands full as Carroll tried but  it was Harrod taking his first win of the year. Carroll was second followed Caleb Reschar, Travis Braden, and Brian Reeser.

Ron Lewis took command of the sport stock feature with fast timer Travis Digges not far behind in second while Chris Boggs rode third with Shawn Stansell chasing him. Digges began to close the gap on Lewis but Lewis and his Affordable Auto Parts special held on to the lead but here came Stansell to join the top two cars and it became a shoot out for the win as they bunched up for the checker and it was Lewis the winner with Digges second and Stansell third with Boggs fourth and Ralph Harrod fifth.

Stacy, Burba, and Braden Claim Kil-Kare Feature Wins

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (5/28) - The stands were packed Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway for the running of the school buses and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events for an action filled night on a great holiday week-end.

Claiming feature wins was Mike Stacy in the Sonic Drive-In late models, Bill Burba in the modifieds, and Travis Braden in the legend cars.

Facing the fans for their thirty lap late model feature was the late models with Sam Heckman and one time feature winner Mike Stacy in the front row to receive starter Mike Stapleton's green flag.

Stacy in his Oakley  Blacktop special held a slight lead over Heckman to take the lead on the second lap. Second fast qualifier and three time feature winner Don Mahaffey came from fourth to second on lap four and then went to work on teammate Stacy. Mahaffey went to the outside lane but Stacy shook him off every time he tried to make a pass. Fast timer Sloan Henderson moved up to the two front runners looking for a chance to challenge them as  Stacy kept the front spot with Mahaffey trying to garner enough horsepower to catch Stacy as Henderson hung right behind them.

Gary Estes rode fourth and Heckman fifth as the front trio ran bumper to bumper lap after lap. With five laps to go the running order was still the same with action slowed when Bobby Justus looped it on the frontstretch.

It was going to be a shootout between the two Oakley cars on the restart but Stacy Hung on to claim his second win followed by Mahaffey, Henderson, Estes, and Heckman.

Heading the pack for the modified feature was former winner Bill Burba and Ralph Harrod. But just after the green flew Rob Garrett and Jamie Breneman tangled going into turn two with Garret hitting the outside wall and Breneman flipping, landing on her top. Fortunately neither driver was injured.

Back underway Burba surged ahead with Caleb Reschar into second with Harrod third and last weeks winner Ryan Fleming fourth. Jason Mahaffey passed Brian Reeser for fifth just before the caution came out for a spin on the backstretch after contact between Jerry Stapleton and Derek Barnette.

Reschar made a move on the inside of Burba on the restart but Burba said no no and pulled away from him. Behind Reschar Harrod was riding third with Fleming still fourth and mahaffey fifth. Burba continued to put someceistande on the field but on the move was Jason Mahaffey as he passed Fleming only to encounter trouble  on lap thirteen on turn one when he made contact with Brian Reeser and slid sideways with fast timer Greg Stapleton and Brandon Oakley sliding to a halt behind Mahaffey who was eliminated with damage to his Paul Storer owned car.

Again the green sailed in the air and young Ryan Fleming tried the inside of Harrod  and Harrod then surged inside of Reschar for second then it was Fleming again challenging Harrod for second and did so on lap twenty as the caution came out again when Reschar spun. Unfortunately for Fleming with the restart reverting back to the last competed lap this put Harrod back in second. Burba continued to set sail only to see the caution again as Jerry Stapleton hit the outside wall on turn two and departed to the pits.

Burba again pulled away leaving Fleming to once again challenge Harrod for second but on the prowl and advancing was Greg Stapleton as he challenged Mike Carroll and then went after Fleming wich he did and then caught Harrod to take second with two laps to go as Burba clamimed his second feature of year in the West Chester Permit Service. In a fine showing it was Stapleton second with Harrod, Fleming, and Carroll the top five.

The FAST Midwest Legend cars made their first stop of the year with Heath Tatman and Bryan Nuckles in the front row with Nuckles leading on the first lap as fast timer Travis Braden challenged him and stole the lead on lap four. Toby Alfrey held the third spot with Tatman and Joey Greening fifth. Braden left Nuckles and Alfrey to battle for second as Alfrey closed in on Nuckles as he tried to make a pass but Nuckles shook him off. Claiming the checker first was Travis BAAaden followed by Nuckles, Alfrey, Greening, and Tatman.

Due to the many delays with numerous crashes throughout the evening and with the large crowd wanting to see the school bus events the sport stocks and compact feature were canceled.

It will be another full program of NASCAR Whelen All-American Racing Series events Friday, June 4, when the super late models of the Main Event Racing Series make a stop at Kil-Kare with gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.

School Buses Invade Kil-Kare Speedway Friday

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH - It will be an exciting night for the fans Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway as the big full size school buses will invade the facility for their first of two scheduled events this season. After the regular program of NASCAR Whelen All-American
Series Sonic Drive-In late models, modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts the buses will take to the figure-8 track for some twenty entertaining laps. After that event all remaining runable buses will line up for a wild bus demolition derby going down to the last bus running to declare the winner.
In the regular racing program Dayton's Don Mahaffey has proven to be the hottest driver so far this season in the late model division. The veteran driver has lowered the track qualifying record two times and has captured the last three features.
In the modified division young Ryan Fleming at the age of fifteen commanded the attention of the fans last week when he captured the feature event to become the youngest driver to do so. Certainly Fleming would like to make it two in a row this week however two time winner Greg Stapleton and one time winner Bill Burba will be in search of another checker flag.
Columbus sports stock driver James Harding has taken a real liking to the tricky three-eights mile track reeling in the last two features which has seen Ron Lewis and Joe Hensel visit victory lane once each.
Not to be outdone by Ryan Fleming in the modifieds, Dayton's fourteen year old Tyler Mahaffey in his first year of racing lead the compact field to victory last week to become the youngest driver to win in that division. Mahaffey will have plenty of competition from one time feature winners Bryan Lynch, Joe Hoelscher, and Tim Haerr Friday.

Don Mahaffey, Ryan Fleming, Stiffler, Harding, Mahaffey Take Kil-Kare Features on DARF Night

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (5/14) - Members of the Dayton Auto Racing Fan club enjoyed a free night of racing at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday which saw Don Mahaffey, Ryan Fleming, Bradley Stiffler, James Harding, Mahaffey    claim feature wins.

In the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sonic Drive-In late models it was like old times with former champs Gary Estes and Sam heckman leading the field to the green for the start of their thirty lap feature.

Heckman surged slightly ahead but Estes rebouned as they continued side by side while Mike Stacu and  Sloan Henderson did likewise. In the blink of an eye the situation changed as Mike Stacy and Don Mahaffey found themselves running one and two and then the battle was between the two teammates. Fast timer Mahaffey stole the lead on lap ten and then said goodby to Stacy.

Henderson crept up on Stacy as farther back in the field Heckman and Estes ran fourth and fifth. Mahaffey continued to put some distance on the field as the laps wound down and Mahaffey started to lap cars with six laps to go as he put Russ Bobb and Jeff Marsh a lap down. With two laps to go the only caution flew when Jack Jones spun on the frontstretch gining Stacy to move up on the bumper of Mahaffey for the restart. At the checker it was Mahaffey and his Oakley blacktop special recording his third straight feature win. the other Oakley Blacktop car of Stacy was second with third going to Sloan Henderson followed by Sam Heckman and Gary Estes.

Fifteen year old Ryan Fleming and Ralph Harrod led the pack to the green in the modified main with rookie Fleming taking the lead over Jason Mahaffey. Meanwhile last weeks winner Bill Burba had advanced to fourth and was chasing down third place running Harrod. Further back in the pack relatives Greg Stapleton and Jerry Stapleton battled for seventh with Greg pulling ahead to move up on the field as the caution flew as Brian Brewer spun on turn two.

Now the former quarter-midget driver Fleming had the pressure of seasoned Mahaffey on him at the restart but again the yellow flew with eleven laps completed when Austin Troyer spun on turn four. Fleming got a jump on the restart and pulled away from Mahaffey. At the halfway it was Fleming, Mahaffey, Harrod, burba, and Derek Weatherhead. Mahaffey poured the power to his Paul Storer machine and closed the door on Fleming but Fleming held the front spot. Again Mahaffey closed in on Fleming as fast timer Greg Stapleton moved into third. Fleming did a good job in lapped traffic as Mahaffey again tried on the outside with two laps to go only to spin on turn two with Mahaffey and Greg Stapleton sent to the tail.

Now Fleming had Bill Burba to contend with on the restart but he held off for the win in the Muffler Brothers of Xenia special to become the youngest driver to win a modified feature at Kil-Kare. Bill Burba was second followed by Ralph Harrod, Jack Jones, Derek Weatherhead.

Matthew Lorance and Trey Craig paced the IKO mini cup cars to the green with Lorance out front followed by fast timer Bradley Stiffler as Stiffler looked for a way to get around the leader. Third place running Trey Craig moved up on the leaders only to find himself off the backstretch to bring out the caution and Craig to the tail. Stiffler stole the lead on the restart and pulled away with Jared Rupert shooting up to second as Lorance droped to third. Trey Craig was making a great comeback from the tail as he was third with eight laps to go. Craig then took second and set his sights on leader Stiffler with five laps to go but Stiffler held on for the win with Trey Craig second trailed by Jared Rupert, Corey Duser and Matthew Lorance.

Former sport stock feature winners Ron Lewis and Joe Hensel made up the frnt row of the sport stock feature with Lewis surging ahead  and last weeks winner James Harding. Harding moved to the outside of Hensel just as Hensel lost it on turn two and spun and was sent to the tail. Harding pulled alongside of Lewis on the restart as they diced for the lead. Back and forth they swapped the lead as Shawn Stansell moved to third followed by fast timer Travis digges in fourth as the yellow flew when Brad Worley spun on the frontstretch. Harding set sail on the restart to leave Lewis behind. Back in the field five cars, Stansell, digges, Jay Lakins, John Haney and Hensel were running bumper to bumper.

Harding was on cruise control as he looked for his second straight feature win with six laps to go as the yellow flew again when Digges spun. Harding had little trouble holding onto the lead when the caution flew again when Digges spun to avoid a bobbling John Dunlap. Harding took the win over Lewis as Stansell was third but Hensel and Lakins tangled as they approached the checker and did not cross the line which gave John Haney fourth and Jamie Sites fifth.

Tim Spriggs and Tyler Mahaffey led the field in the compactt feature which had to be restarted before a lap was completed due to a spin. Rookie Mahaffey charged into the lead with Spriggs second and again the yellow flew when Bo Hoelscher spun on the first lap. Mahaffey continued to lead as the veteran drivers behind him were on the move trying to work their way to the front. Second fast timer Bryan Lynch came from eighth to fourth by the halfway marrk and moved into second by lap fifteen. Lynch was reeling in Mahaffey  with Joe Hoelscher running third. Rookie  fifteen year old Tyler Mahaffey in his Affordable Auto Parts machine picked up his first feature win as Hoelscher made a daring move around Lynch for second with Lynch third followed by David Sagers and Tim Spriggs.

Next Friday, May 21, the big full size school buses will invade the Kil-Kare facility for a figure-8 feature and a school bus demolition derby rounding out the nights program. Preceding the school buses the regular Friday night divisions will see action with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.

Mahaffey Repeats at Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH (5/7) - It was a cool evening Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway for the NASCAR whelen All-American Series events but when the final checkers waved it was Don Mahaffey, Bill Burba, James Harding, and Tim Haerr taking feature wins.

Former track champions Sam Heckman and Gary Estes brought the Sonic Drive-In late models to the green with Estes surging into the lead as Mike Stacy charged to second on the first lap and then sized up Estes. Fast timer Don Mahaffey came on strong and showed as the leader on lap ten as he came from fifth to do so. Estes held on to second but behind him Heckman and Mike Stacy  rode side by side with Sloan Henderson right in the thick of action. Henderson surged ahead to take second spot as Estes slipped to fourth. Mahaffey and his Okley Blacktop special enjoyed a third lap lead when the caution came out with seven laps to go as Sam Heckman and Terry Scherz spun on turn two.

Mahaffey continued to set the pace but henderson and Stacy was moving up on the leader as the laps wore down. Mahaffey took the win followed by Sloan Henderson, Mike Stacy, Gary Estes, and Bobby Justus.

Twenty modifieds started their thirty lap feature with Bill Burba and Brian Reeser in the front row to face Mike Stapleton's green flag. Burba took the lead as Jason Mahaffey displaced Reeser for second with Jack Jones third and fast timer Greg Stapleton fourth by lap three. Action was slowed on lap three when Jamie Brenneman lost it on the frontstretch for the first caution.

Burba enjoyed the lead on the restart as Stapleton was looking for a way around third place running Jones as Stapleton claimed third on lap eight. Jason Mahaffey who had been running second then tried the outside lane to catch leader Burba to no avail as the top four ran real close together. At the halfway point it was Stapleton on the inside of Mahaffy but Mahaffey shook him off as Burba moved up on slower cars. Burba began to pull away from the field only to see the caution come out on lap twenty one for a spin on the backstretch.

With five laps to go it still was Burba in command but here came Stapleton on the outside to pass Mahaffey for second and then look out Burba, Stapleton is coming. Alsongside of burba went Stapleton as they ran side by side to the white flag and when they hit the checker it was Burba in his West Chester Permit Service special by four feet with Jason Mahaffey a very close third for a very exciting finish.  Forth was Jack Jones and fifth was Brad Williams

Jay Lakins Jr. and Ron Lewis were the pace setters in the sport stocks with Lakins taking the lead only to be slowed on the first lap when two cars tangled on the backstretch. Lakins held the front spot as fast timer James Harding who started seventh was in third by lap three and was after Lewis for second  as he made his pass good on lap five and then sailed around Lakins  and then left the field to fend for themselves.

The traffic was heavy behind third place running Lakins as John Haney, Shawn Stansell, Travis Digges and Joe Hensel were battling for positions but the caution alowed the pace on lap eleven. Harding held a comfortable lead as the laps wound down but Lakins had his hands full as Joe Hensel passed him for third on lap sixteen. Another caution slowed the pace again with three laps to go enabling the field to bunch up.

Hensel slipped around Lewis on the restart for second as Lewis fell back and out with a flat tire, then the scene was set for a shootout between Harding and Hensel for the win. Hensel rode on Harding's rear bumper but Harding didn't give up. Harding held on for the win followed by Joe Hensel, Jay Lakins Jr., John Haney, and Shawn Stansell.

The compact cars hit the fifth-mile track for their twenty lap feature with Paul Holley and Dave Sagers in the front row  but fireworks erupted on the first lap. Amber Sites was on the move but she and Bo Hoelscher tangled on turn four making a restart necessary with Sites heading to the pits.

Sagers beat Holley into turn one but Tim Haerr was on the move as he took the lead on the first lap leaving Holley and Sagers to battle for second. former winner Joe Hoelscher came from fifth to second as he set his sights on leader Haerr.

Rodney Terry came from the tail to third by the halfway point as Holley and Bryan Lynch battled side by side for fourth. Haerr weeded his way through slower cars as Hoelscher was slowly advancing on the leader. Haerr and his Mahaffey Auto Salvage special took the win with Hoelscher second followed by Rodney Terry, Bryan Lynch, and Paul Holley.

Mahaffey and Stapleton Disqualified, Stacy and Jones Take Wins at Kil-Kare

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, Oh. - After being rained-out three straight weeks so far this year Kil-Kare Speedway finally got a racing program in Friday night with a fine field of cars on hand. Claiming feature wins in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events were Don Mahaffey, Greg Stapleton, Joe Hensel, and Joe Hoelscher however Mahaffey and Stapleton failed post race inspection giving the late model win to Mike stacy and Kyle Jones the modified.

The Sonic Drive-In late models were first to take to the track for their thirty lap feature with Terry Scherz and Sam Heckman in the front row. Veteran and former track champ Heckman took the lead with Bobby Justus in tow and track record holder Don Mahaffey in third only to see the caution come out when Justin Alsip spun on turn three.

Heckman set sail on the restart as Don Mahaffey went to the outside to pull alongside of Justus for second and then passed Heckman on lap four for the lead. Quite a battle developed for second between Heckman, Justus and Mike Stacy when the caution flew again on lap six. Mahaffey, celebrating his birthday held the lead on the restart when the green unfolded again. Stacy then went to work on Justus as he tried to unseat Justus for the third sport as Mahaffey built up a good lead.

At the halfway mark Mahaffey had nearly a half lap lead as Stacy stole second from Heckman when the caution flew again due to a mix up on the frontstretch. With the field reverting back to the last completed lap this put Heckman back in second and Stacy in third with his work cut out for him to once again get around Heckman and it only took him one lap to do so as he now set his sights on teammate Mahaffey.

Further back tail starter Justin Alsip had moved into the fourth position as he reeled in Heckman. Alsip made his pass good on lap twenty seven. When the checker waved Mahaffey and his Oakley Blacktop sponsored machine claimed his first win of the year while teammate Mike Stacy claimed second followed by Justin Alsip, Sam Heckman, and Terry Scherz however Mahaffey's mount failed post race inspection as did Alsip and Scherz with the win going to Stacy.

With a large field of modifieds on hand management booted the win to $1,000 and the drivers were hungry. Brandon Oakley and Jason Mahaffey were on the front row but the caution flew two times before an official lap was recorded and Oakley departed to the pits which then put Brad Williams and Mahaffey in the front row. Mahaffey nosed ahead at the green to lead with Williams, Jack Jones, Kyle Jones and Ryan Fleming all battling for fourth. Mahaffey kept his Paul Storer machine in front as Kyle Jones worked the outside lane on Brad Williams. Jones took second on lap twelve and then went after leader Mahaffey. At the halfway it was Mahaffey, Jones, Williams, fast timer greg Stapleton and Bill Burba in the top five.

The caution flew on lap fourteen slowing the pace and giving Stapleton a chance to move up on the rear bumper of Mahaffey. Jones tried the inside of Mahaffey as they rubbed tires on turn four but Mahaffey shook him off and again the yellow flew on lap eighteen. When the green waved again sixth place starter Klyle Jones decided to try the outside lane but another yellow waved so again on the restart Jones was looking a way to the front as Mahaffey poured the power to his car and pulled away but by lap twenty three they were bumper to bumper. A three car battle was in the making for the lead as Mahaffey and Jones slid high on turn three enabling Stapleton to inherit the lead and take home the one thousand dollars.

When the checker waved it was the Underwood Vinyl and tile car of Greg Stapleton taking the win fillowed by Kyle Jones, Jason Mahaffey, Brad Williams, and Bill Burba but Jones inherited the win as Stapleton's mount failed post race inspection as did Mahaffey's.

Next on the program was the sport stocks with second generation driver Jay Laykins Jr. and James Harding bringing the field to starter Mike Stapleton's green flag. Side by side into turn one they were and when they hit the backstretch it was Harding in front with Lakins second with a battle for third between fast timer Shawn Stansell, Joe Hensel and Travis Digges. Stansell was in third as he sized up second place running Hensel as Hensel held his lane shutting the door on Hensel when Hensel bobbled on the backstretch putting Stansell in second as leader Harding began to lap traffic. Unfortunately Harding got blocked by slow cars as Stansell took advantage to close the gap but a caution slowed the pace.

On the restart Harding was in front as again Stansell was dogging him every which way as Hensel held a steady third and Lakins fourth with Digges fifth. Sparks flew on the white flag lap as Harding and Stanseel tangled on the backstretch with Stansell suffering a flat tire which was a great thing for Hensell as he was now the leader and a night to celebrate as he took the win in the Lee's Fencing machine with Lakins second, Phil Gussler third, Ron Lewis fourth and John Haney fifth.

The Hoelscher's, Joe and Bo led the compacts to the green as it was side by side racing after three false starts. Nine cars were bumper to bumper for numerous laps as Joe led BT who was challenged by Troy Patterson. Amber Sites and Paul Holly battled with Holly taking third as fast timer Tim Haerr on the move. Haerr was in third by lap ten as he rode the rear bumper of Harshbarger. Haerr then went to the outside to claim second as Rodney Terry was now in fourth. Joe Hoelscher tried to hold off Haerr as Haerr rode the outside as the white flag waved and when they reached the checker it was Hoelscher by three feet over Hoelscher in an exciting finish. Troy Patterson was home third followed by Rodney terry and Bryan Lynch.

Closing out  the night was the wild trailer figure-8 race of destruction with the $500 top money going to Logan Schwieger.

It will be another full racing program Friday night featuring the NASCAR All-American Series Sonic Drive-In late models, modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
