One team noticeably
absent from the ASA garage area at Lowes Motor Speedway last week was that of
Kris Stump Racing. While the field signed
in, turned out for practice and qualified, Stump remained at his Southern-Ohio
based shop without questioning his decision. Stump,
the 24-year old owner and driver in his second year on the ASA National Tour
circuit stated lack of funding and safety concerns as grounds for ending his
season early.
“I have a great concern about the safety of these cars,”
Stump said. “Two races, and two drivers
getting helicoptered out is not a success in my eyes.
I have not seen any data as far as ASA crashing some of these chassis on
a sled, and learning from it. It’s
really scary to think what would happen with a hard impact to the foot-box area,
as there is little or no protection there. I’m
glad to see teams are starting to get a better handle on the cars (referencing
only 4 cautions during the race at Lowes), but I think that may have been more
of a surprise than expectation.”
“The work they did to the new center section is definitely
a big improvement, but I don’t think it’s going to allow the car to be
competitive on the short tracks. And
we’re still not running inner liners in the tires, I just don’t understand
that. Whether considered
insignificant by others or not, right now I just see too many safety issues to
be out there racing the final two events.”
“Race car drivers will drive just about anything anytime.
This is the first time safety concerns have been strong enough to keep me
out of a car. This is not the way I
planned to end my 2004 season. As a
driver I want to be at Charlotte and Atlanta showing what we know we as a team
are capable of. As the team owner I just
can’t put my car out there until I believe my safety concerns have been
properly addressed. I don’t want people
to think I’m just sitting around complaining, because I’m not. I’m just being realistic and responsible about a situation that
I’m sure ASA will be giving a great deal of thought and attention to during
the off season.”
“The other factor in the team not competing in the final
two events is simply the cost of the speedway races.
When you look at what the tire bill is, and the cost of hotels during a
Nextel Cup weekend, it adds probably $8,000 of expense to the weekend.
Not having a primary sponsor has helped in our decision to stay home and
regroup for 2005. We may take that money
we saved and go test this winter. Other
than the open test session at Kentucky Speedway (in the spring) the only time
our car was on a racetrack was at the track we were racing that weekend.
When you can’t test it makes it hard to compete against teams that do
so on a weekly basis.”
“I had some great sponsors on the car this year who really
helped us out. One person whose name is
not on the car, but is probably the biggest help to this race team is Ed Hock.
A former ASA team owner, Ed owns the trailer and 95% of the pit equipment
we used every race. If it weren’t for
Ed we wouldn’t be racing. We always had
a car that made us look like a million bucks, but in reality we generated more
sponsorship funds when I was running the Friday and Saturday night short tracks
in Ohio.”

“We’re just thrilled with the finish,”
said Kris Stump of his sixth place finish in the ASA BF-Goodrich Tires 125 held
at Kentucky Speedway last Friday night. “The
fact that we were able to take a short track car out onto a superspeedway, run
up front all night long and bring it home in sixth place is just amazing.”
“I think I’m happier for the team than I am for
myself,” said Stump. “We got home
from Lanier (a 3/8 mile short track in Braselton, Georgia) on Sunday and we
loaded the hauler for Kentucky on Thursday afternoon.
The guys had been giving it 110% all week trying to get the car converted
over from the short track set up of Lanier to the 1.5 mile superspeedway set up
for Kentucky. Unlike the driver who gets
to do his job in front of thousands of fans, the crew works countless hours well
out of the spotlight. Being a
Southern-Ohio based team, it was really rewarding for the crew to know that all
their friends and families were right there watching their hard work pay off.
They’ve earned the short break they’re going to have before we head
out to run at Lake Erie Speedway (Erie, Pennsylvania) on Memorial Day
week-end.”
Asked about his thoughts on qualifying Stump
responded, “I think it surprised a lot of people, including myself, that so
many of the heavy hitters (drivers with previous superspeedway and/or Kentucky
Speedway experience and cars specifically built just to run on the
superspeedway) started back in the field and then just couldn’t seem to work
their way to the front. We qualified
seventh, our ASA career best start and then followed that up by posting our best
ASA finish. I just think that shows how
hard the crew worked.”
“My crew chief Tommy Simpson, pulled everything together in
the pits. He had a plan and executed it
perfectly. The pit stops were ‘in and
out’. No hesitations!
No glitches! No problems! We had planned on two stops and that’s all we made.
We took four tires, fuel and made a slight adjustment on the first stop
and then took tires and another minor adjustment on our final stop.
I was able to gain track position both times.”
“To have my best ASA finish come at
Kentucky Speedway meant a lot to me. Our
shop is located just north of Cincinnati so we consider Kentucky our home track.
It was great to be able to have our sponsors and all our families at the
track to celebrate with us after the race. There
was so much celebrating going on in our garage stall that people thought we had
the winning car!”
“As was excited as
I was to come to Kentucky Speedway as a part of ASA’s return to the
superspeedway I’m even more excited knowing we’re returning to Kentucky
Speedway in September for the V-Taps Triple Header. But there’s a lot of racing to be done between now and then
so for Kris Stump Racing it’s back to business!
