JOHNSON CONTINUES BANDIMERE DOMINATION IN PRO STOCK

Kalitta, Hight and Hines also race to victory at Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals

MORRISON, Colo. – Allen Johnson raced to his first Pro Stock victory of the season and his third win in the last four years at Bandimere Speedway to finish off a successful weekend for his team Sunday at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event near Denver.

Johnson took his eighth career Pro Stock win from the No. 1 qualifying position when he outran Jeg Coughlin in the final round. Johnson powered his Team Mopar Dodge Avenger to a 6.974 second run at 198.26 mph to finish in front of Coughlin, whose JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt slowed at mid-track and posted a 7.858 at 135.09.

“We’ve got an awesome setup for this track,” said Johnson who has advanced to the final at this event the last four seasons. “The engine guys do an unbelievable job on the motors for this place. I’d like to race every race here. To go up against Greg in the second round and Jeg in the final, I knew I had to be on my game. Fortunately I was able to do it today.”

Johnson continued to solidify his claim to second place in the final regular season Pro Stock points order with his effort this weekend and is showing that he will be one of the top challengers for the Pro Stock championship in the playoffs.

“I was tickled with how I did my job today,” said Johnson, who beat Bob Yonke, Anderson,  and Johnny Gray to advance to his fourth final round of the season. “We’ve got to continue this pace and be aggressive and go toward that championship and hopefully pull it off.”

Kalitta scored his first win of the season in Top Fuel and joined uncle Connie Kalitta and late cousin Scott Kalitta as winners at the high-altitude dragstrip. Kalitta posted a 3.963 at 308.35 in his Kalitta Motorsports dragster to beat Brandon Bernstein, who trailed with a 4.003 at 297.35 in his Copart/Lucas Oil dragster.

Kalitta outran Terry McMillen, Steve Torrence and Rod Fuller in earlier rounds to claim his 32nd career victory.

“Seeing that win light come on down there was real special and a great relief,” Kalitta said of his final round match with Bernstein. “This facility gets better and better. I am so glad to finally get a win here. We’ve been close a bunch of times and finally got it done today.”

Hight earned his fourth victory of the season and 18th of his career in Funny Car as he outran team owner John Force in the final round.  Hight’s Auto Club Ford Mustang finished in 4.215 at 296.05, just ahead of Force’s Castrol GTX High-Mileage Mustang, which ran 4.386 at 284.99.

“It’s a great win for us and we only have one more race to go before the Countdown,” said Hight, who advanced to the final with early round wins over James Day, Ron Capps and top qualifier Matt Hagan. “It is definitely a turnaround from last year when we went into Brainerd and wasn’t even qualified for the Countdown.”

Hight took his second Bandimere win and closed the gap between series leader Force, who is now 28 points ahead.

“This is the best season I’ve ever had,” Hight said. “I’ve never won four races in a season. John and I are only separated by a little over one round and I am sure he’ll be ribbing me about it the next two weeks. You can see how bad John wants to win. He’s definitely on a mission. I am sure he’s happy for us, but you know he wanted to win.”

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Hines claimed his third win of the season and 21st of his career by defeating Karen Stoffer in the final. Hines rode his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to a 7.342 at 178.02 to hold off Stoffer’s GEICO Powersports Suzuki, which clocked a 7.402 at 175.94.

“My riding has really come around in the last three or four races,” said Hines, who defeated rookie LE Tonglet, Jim Underdahl and top qualifier Michael Phillips in the first three rounds. “Every round we had to scratch for it. Karen is a tough competitor and she’s got her motorcycle turned around. The Suzuki’s were dominant all weekend, but our V-Rod was able to beat them today all four rounds.”

Hines, a California native who spent all of his teenage years in Trinidad, Colo., says winning his second race at Bandimere is very special to him.

“I grew up three hours south of here and spent ages 10 to 20 here,” Hines said. “I know this place as my home. To come back here and get a win on the mountain says a lot about my team. We didn’t have the best motorcycle all weekend, but we were able to get the job done.”

The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series continues Aug. 12-15 at Brainerd (Minn.) International Raceway with the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, the final race of the Countdown to 10, NHRA's regular season. The Countdown to 1, NHRA’s six-race championship playoffs, starts Sept. 1-6 with the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis.

CORY MAC, ANDERSON SEEK SWEEP REPEAT

Tim Wilkerson repeats in Funny Car at Northwest Nationals

KENT , Wash. – With their wins on Sunday at the 23rd annual NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways, Cory McClenathan and Greg Anderson successfully began their respective quests to become the first driver(s) to sweep the Western Swing twice

The other winner at the 14th race in the 23-event NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series was Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car), who also won at this event in 2009.

McClenathan faced off against Antron Brown – who swept the Western Swing in 2009 – in the Top Fuel final round and his 3.887 at 311.70 in the FRAM dragster was just good enough to outrun Brown’s 3.909 at 308.92 in the Matco Tools dragster.

“There’s Antron (Brown) and myself in the final, we’ve both won (the Western Swing) … I want to be the first to win it two times,” said McClenathan, who swept the Western Swing in 1997. “I know that’s a lot to ask for, but you can’t get there until you win this first one and that’s what we did.”

The win also moved McClenathan around teammate Tony Schumacher and into second place in the Top Fuel point standings.

The Funny Car final was also a near photo-finish with Wilkerson (4.221 at 292.39) powering the Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford to a narrow victory over Ron Capps (4.246 at 289.51) and the NAPA Dodge Charger team.

It was the third straight final round for the LRS Ford team and second straight win in a space in the schedule – summertime – where they traditionally have done well.

“We’re happy to be in the position we’re in and we seem to really come into our own in this kind of weather,” said Wilkerson, who moved around Ashley Force Hood into fifth place. “We try not to think about it or do anything to pull us backwards. Just go run the racetrack every round.”

In Pro Stock, Greg Anderson won his second straight race with a 6.599 at 209.56 in his Summit Racing Pontiac GXP to Johnny Gray’s 6.626 at 209.43 in his NTB Pontiac GXP.

“I’m the only guy (in Pro Stock) with a chance two sweep (the Western Swing),” said Anderson, who remains the only Pro Stocker to sweep the Western Swing (he did it in 2004). “It’s a neat, neat deal. I’ve been able to do it once in my career and I remember what a great feeling that was. It’s still a long way down the road, and I’m not going to say we’re going to win those two races, but we’ve got a chance. I’ve got a great hot rod right now.”

The NHRA Full Throttle Series heads south now to Sonoma for the FRAM Autolite NHRA Nationals, the second leg in the Western Swing.

FORCE WINS NHRA-RECORD 130th RACE, REGAINS POINTS LEAD

Schumacher, Edwards also win at 10th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals

BRISTOL, Tenn. – John Force regained the points lead with his NHRA-record 130th career win Sunday at the 10th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.

The other winners at the 12th race in the 23-race NHRA Full Throttle Series season were Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Mike Edwards (Pro Stock).

After qualifying sixth, Force defeated Paul Lee, Matt Hagan and Bob Tasca to reach his 207th career final round where he easily defeated Tim Wilkerson with a 4.317-second pass at 285.59 mph to Wilkerson’s stumbling 12.365 at 31.80.

“To get this win is really great. I'll be honest, I was jacked up on so much Full Throttle I thought I was going to explode ... oxygen, everything I could take just to keep up with the kids,” said the 61-year old Force, who left Bristol with a 58-point lead over teammate Robert Hight as he seeks to win his NHRA-record 15th championship. "I'm going to stay young and thank the fans who keep screaming and giving me the energy."

Force, who drives the Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang, had led the point standings after the first nine races before ceding the lead momentarily to Hight for Races 10 and 11.

Wilkerson, meanwhile, wasn’t able to gain any positions in the point standings – he remained in ninth – but he and the Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford team did move 111 points clear of 11th-place Jeff Arend with five races left in the Countdown to 10 regular season.

Schumacher and the U.S. Army team also qualified sixth and seemed fated for a second-round matchup with rival and points-leader Larry Dixon and the Al-Anabi team in the second round, but No. 14 qualifier Morgan Lucas put that to rest with his upset of Dixon in the first round.

So Schumacher didn’t meet a higher qualified racer until the semis when he dispatched of No. 2 qualifier Cory McClenathan and the FRAM dragster team, and then he secured his fourth win of 2010 and 65th of his career with a 3.982 at 306.53 in the final-round win over No. 4 qualifier Brandon Bernstein and the Copart/Lucas Oil team (4.054 at 272.56).

This was also Schumacher’s 100th career final round.

“That was an amazing deal, me, Dixon (98) and (Joe) Amato were all at 99 (final rounds) and only one guy’s getting to 100 first. To be the first to go to 100 finals in Top Fuel is just awesome,” said Schumacher, who became the second Top Fuel driver and third overall to clinch his berth in the Countdown to 1.

In Pro Stock, Mike Edwards captured his NHRA-best eighth win before hitting second gear in his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP as final-round opponent Rickie Jones red-lighted.

“(Bristol Dragway) is probably my favorite place to come race, just an awesome place. The fans … they’re just race fans, no matter what kind of racing it is, they’re race fans,” Edwards said. “It is my second time winning here and with so much heritage and tradition around here, this track and that big track over there, it’s just a real honor to come here and run good and win this race.”

The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series continues next weekend with the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Norwalk , Ohio , the fourth race in four weeks and the fourth race in a stretch of seven races in eight weeks.

DIXON, HAGAN, EDWARDS, TONGLET FIND WINNER’S CIRCLE IN CHICAGO

JOLIET, Ill. – Larry Dixon raced past defending world champion Tony Schumacher to grab the win at the rain-delayed United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Matt Hagan, Mike Edwards and LE Tonglet also won in their respective categories at the 10th of 23 events on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

Dixon drove his Al-Anabi Racing dragster to a 3.823-second run at 323.12 mph past Schumacher to earn his fifth win of the season and 53rd of his career. It was also the sixth time this season that Dixon and Schumacher met each other during eliminations.

“Obviously this is big,” said Dixon. “Any time you win it is huge. The last couple of times we ran in the final, he has got the best of us. It was a long day, at the same time, not as long as Friday and it was definitely worth the wait. This track is the gold standard when sun is off of it. It is awesome. And a final round under the lights is so cool. This is what I grew up on. My dad raced a bunch of times at Orange County and Lions at night. Our sport is cool at night. I wish we raced through the summer on Saturday nights.”

With his final round appearance, Schumacher was able to move from third to second in the Top Fuel point standings, just behind first-place Dixon.

In Funny Car, Hagan not only stopped runner-up finisher Robert Hight’s current winning streak, but set the national record for time in the process. Hagan drove his DieHard Dodge Charger R/T to a 4.035 at 312.78, which was just enough to back up his semifinal time of 4.022-seconds to set the new national record and pick up those valuable 20 extra points in the process. It was also Hagan’s second career win.

“This was (crew chief) Tommy DeLago and John Medlen’s race,” said Hagan. “In the first race we won in Houston, I had to pedal the car but not here. This weekend, I had a great race car. We tested some stuff recently but they put what they know back in the race car this weekend. I told Tommy ‘That’s the race car I’m used to.’ It’s great to have that confidence and great to set the record and win the race.”

While his three-race winning streak came to an end, runner-up finisher Hight did take the points lead from team owner John Force with his final round appearance.

In Pro Stock, Edwards continued his dominance over the class and followed up his win in Topeka with his sixth win of the season. Edwards drove his Penhall/Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP to a 6.594 at 208.49 and past runner-up Jason Line.

“That’s what Pro Stock is all about,” said Edwards. “The first thing Jason said to me was ‘Man, you were late.’ What a great way to finish the day. We weren’t at our best today but we managed to pull off another win. It just feels great.”

Pro Stock Motorcycle rider LE Tonglet held off Steve Johnson to pick up his first career win in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. Tonglet rode his GT Motorsports Suzuki to a 6.935 at 190.38 to pick up his first win in just his second season of racing.

“My emotions are so high right now,” said Tonglet. “I’ve been waiting for this day all my life. GT (Tonglet, brother) won a few times, but to have one of my own is awesome. We’re on a tight budget and this might get us through New Jersey and maybe even Norwalk.”

HIGHT, SCHUMACHER AND EDWARDS SECURE VICTORIES AT O’REILLY AUTO PARTS NHRA SUMMER NATIONALS AT HEARTLAND PARK TOPEKA

TOPEKA, Kan. – Robert Hight continued on his impressive three race hot streak and  dominated the Funny Car field to get his third win in as many races during the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.  Tony Schumacher took home the win in Top Fuel and Mike Edwards secured a victory in Pro Stock.

In the final round of Funny Car, Hight in his Auto Club Ford Mustang, was able to hold off the DHL Toyota Camry driven by Jeff Arend for his 17th career victory during his 4.104-second, 303.50 mph pass to the losing effort of 4.150-seconds at 300.80 mph by Arend.  Hight started the day as the No. 1 qualifier and used to his advantage as he defeated a tough field of competitors including teammate Ashley Force Hood.  With the win Hight, the 2009 Full Throttle Series World Funny Car Champion, closes within 49 points of current points leader and his team owner John Force.

“Right now what is happening to the Auto Club Ford is stuff you dream about.  To win three in a row, I’ve only ever won three races in a season and to win three in a row, to come out here and qualify No. 1 and win from the pole is tough to do and not many guys do that,” said Hight following the race.

“It’s also all about the team.  I like baseball, basketball all that stuff and a big Los Angeles Lakers fan and Kobe Bryant.  Kobe is the Lakers but it takes the entire team around him, he couldn’t win alone.  You see Lebron James and what he does, they couldn’t win with just one guy.  Kobe Bryant is Jimmy Prock [crew chief] and there are eight other guys putting that thing together perfectly every run not making any mistakes.  All the variables there are with these fuel cars, clutch discs, tires, traction there so many variables and to run like this and to do a job like we are doing you have to give to the whole team.“

The Top Fuel final pitted Schumacher in his U. S. Army dragster up against his Don Schumacher Racing teammate Cory McClenathan.  Schumacher took the lead off the starting line and was able to hold off McClenathan in the Fram dragster for the win with a run of 3.875-seconds at 310.27 mph to the losing effort of 3.864-seconds 312.35 mph.  This is the third win of the season for Schumacher and he has yet to be defeated when making it to the finals.

“It was a heck of a day,” said Schumacher. “To go out and beat Cory by five-thousandths of a second, Dixon the round before, and Shawn Langdon by eight-thousandths of a second; that’s what racing is about. That’s why you get up in the morning. I say it all the time, it’s not the trophy, it’s getting up Sunday morning and knowing you’re going to have to dig real deep to get it, and we did.

“We needed to get [Topeka] off the list. It’s been a great career but there were two tracks I hadn’t won at, here and Atlanta. I’ve got Atlanta left and I’ve still got time in my career to go out and do that. I enjoy those big moments, where you have to really pull something off and that’s what we had today. Cory’s a great driver and he gave us a great race. We knew it was just going to be just inches no matter what.”

Edwards notched his fifth win of the season and his domination of the category continued when he was able to defeat Allen Johnson in the finals.  Edwards in his Penhall / Interstate Batteries Pontiac GXP, posted a winning run of 6.717-seconds at 204.63 mph to the losing effort of 6.710 at 205.19 of the Team Mopar / J7J Racing Dodge Avenger driven by Johnson.  This year Edwards has 26 round wins to only four losses and also secured his seventh No. 1 qualifying position of the season during the course of the weekend.

“It’s been awhile since our last win in Topeka [in 1999], although we were runner-up to Allen Johnson last year,” said Edwards. “But what made this weekend so special was the fact that my parents, A.C. and Gladys were here to see the win. They’ve never been to any of the races that I’ve won before, and you can’t believe how much it means to me for them to see this one. They’re from Oklahoma., and they only get to come to this race and maybe a couple of times to Dallas.

“We managed to leave first today because, and that was a good thing because that Hemi Dodge of Roy and Allen Johnson is really running strong, they are a top-notch team and they’re going to be something to reckon with all year long. I’m not sure that they won’t make a lot of winner’s circles this year because they are running extremely strong.”

DIXON, HIGHT, COUGHLIN AND HINES WIN SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT NHRA SOUTHERN NATIONALS AT ATLANTA DRAGWAY

COMMERCE, Ga. – Larry Dixon tied Joe Amato for second on the NHRA Top Fuel wins list by racing to his 52nd career victory Sunday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.

Robert Hight, Jeg Coughlin and Andrew Hines also were winners in their respective categories at the eighth of 23 events in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

Dixon powered his Al-Anabi Racing dragster to his fourth win of the season and increased his series lead by outrunning Brandon Bernstein in the final round. Dixon covered the race distance in 3.913 seconds at 311.49 mph, but ultimately didn’t need the performance as Bernstein suffered a rare red-light start in his Copart/Lucas Oil dragster.

"[ Brandon ] took a shot at the Tree and went .003 red, but if he goes .003 green he has a chance to win the race," Dixon said. "He has a good car and if you get eight-hundredths on a guy, there's not eight-hundredths between our cars. We went up there with what we thought the track could take, and you have to hope it's enough, and today it was. The car was flawless; we had a really tight package. To have seven runs between an .86 and a .91 that's pretty stout, and then to have an .82 for the pole just adds to it.”

Dixon beat Steve Torrence, T.J. Zizzo and rival Tony Schumacher in earlier rounds for his fourth Atlanta Dragway win. A strong student of NHRA history, Dixon is humble about tying five-time world champ Amato, a legendary figure in the sport.

"I feel the same way [about tying Amato] as I do against the other people I grew up looking up to: Unworthy,” said Dixon, who now leads second place Cory McClenathan by 112 points as he works on earning his third world championship title.  “To be able to reach a number that [Amato] got ... well, I'm a few championships behind him still. The guys I looked up to didn’t get 23 chances a year to win."

Defending Funny Car world champ Hight earned his second consecutive victory of the season, holding off recent Atlanta Dragway dominator Ashley Force Hood in the final round. Hight posted a winning run of 4.185 at 298.01 in his Auto Club Ford Mustang, while Force Hood’s Castrol GTX Mustang trailed with a 4.232 at 297.48 in her third-consecutive event final.

"No matter what, we couldn't lose, it was going to be a Force win," said Hight, who beat Melanie Troxel, Tim Wilkerson and defending event winner Jack Beckman to advance to the final. "But to leave here 1-2-3 in points is pretty big right now, especially this early in the season. We were real happy with the way we finished last season and were looking forward to this year, but like last year we struggled again. We didn’t get it turned around until Sunday morning in Madison when Jimmy Prock made a wholesale change to the car and we haven't looked back since. This Ford Mustang has been unbelievable all weekend. Jimmy definitely has a handle on the car; to run .18, .18, .19, and .18 again, that's unheard-of in these fuel cars."

John Force maintained his series lead despite a second round loss to the eventual runner-up. Force Hood and Hight are second and third in the standings respectively.

Coughlin became the fourth Pro Stock racer in NHRA history and the ninth in the Full Throttle Series to earn 50 victories when he outran Rickie Jones in the final round. Coughlin took his second win at Atlanta Dragway with a performance of 6.659 at 207.21 in his JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt to hold off the hard-charging Elite Motorsports Pontiac GXP of the 22-year-old Jones, who finished in 6.686 at 206.35.

"I was fortunate to eclipse the 50-win mark – including my Lucas Oil wins – a few years ago and thought I was done with 50 but was reminded here lately of the next plateau,” said Coughlin, who outran Ronnie Humphrey, V. Gaines and top qualifier Allen Johnson in earlier rounds. “To celebrate it here, in JEGS' 50th anniversary year, I'm very happy."

Coughlin said he was ready for the quick-reacting Jones in the final. Jones used a series of holeshot starts to upset series points leader Mike Edwards in the first round, three-time world champ Greg Anderson in the quarterfinals and Johnny Gray in the semis to advance to his second career final.

"Rickie used to come to the ropes when he was 11 or 12 years old and wanted to hit the practice 'Tree against me and he's been telling me for years he's coming after us," Coughlin said. "It's neat to see him growing and getting to do what he loves to do, so congratulations to him. He had a great day.”

Coughlin moved to third in the point standings with the win, behind leader Edwards and second place Johnson.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, three-time world champ Hines raced to the victory over defending series champ Hector Arana. Hines earned his second win of the season and 20th of his career with a 6.968 at 190.24 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson in the final, while Arana’s Lucas Oil Buell slowed with a 7.047 at 188.12.

Hines raced to early round wins over Mike Berry, Craig Treble and David Hope.

“This is about as good as it gets,” Hines said. “It was a good, clean race in the final. I had to push it in the final. I knew Hector was strong. He had been running good all weekend, and he qualified No. 1, so I held onto the clutch lever with just the lightest amount of pressure that I could, and I was .006. That was a little closer than I wanted it, but I’ll take it. He’s a tough competitor. He’s the world champ from last year, and it doesn’t put a bigger smile on our face than to beat him.”

With his third runner-up finish of the season, Arana maintained his series lead over Matt Smith and Hines, who moved to third overall with the win.

The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series continues next weekend in Kansas with the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

THE PROFESSOR ‘RETURNS FROM SABBATICAL’ WITH 97TH WIN

Schumacher, Hight, Phillips round out winners at 14th AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals

MADISON , Ill. – Veteran Pro Stock driver Warren Johnson, the second-winningest driver in NHRA Full Throttle Series history, ended a four-year drought with his 97th career win Sunday at the 14th annual AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway International Raceway.

The other winners at the seventh event in the 23-race NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series were Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Michael Phillips (Pro Stock Motorcycle).

Johnson’s improbable win in his K&N Filters Pontiac GXP – points leader Mike Edwards (in the semis) and third-place Jeg Coughlin (in the finals) each failed to get off the starting line – gave the 66-year old driver and six-time NHRA Full Throttle Series champion his first victory since the NHRA Arizona Nationals in February 2006.

“I guess I woke up on the right side of the bed this morning … everybody I raced did something wrong,” said Johnson, who moved to within five points of Shane Gray for the 10th and final playoff berth in Pro Stock. “I had to rely on luck and other people’s mistakes (but) we’ll still take it. There is no such thing as a bad win.”

“I still realize that we’re not where we want to be, performance-wise,” Johnson continued. “We’re down four or five hundredths, but we can fix that. Other racers have stepped up, but sooner or later we’ll get back on top.”

In Top Fuel, U.S. Army driver Tony Schumacher won for the second time this season and 63rd time in his career with a 3.849 at 317.87 to the 4.041 at 313.07 from the Rocky Boots team and driver Doug Kalitta, who is now 0-for-4 in final rounds this season.

“This was a great win. We outperformed everybody we raced and got a lucky break against Pat (Dakin, against whom he hazed the tires),” said Schumacher, who moved to within six wins of Kenny Bernstein (69) for fourth place on the NHRA Full Throttle Series’ all-time wins list.

“I was talking with (crew chief) Mike (Green) and he said, ‘Every time we back it down, we get in trouble.’ He went for it and made some nice runs. If you look back, a lot of these races are won in the second round and semifinals by putting up a stout run and keeping lane choice in the late rounds.”

In Funny Car, 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Series champion Robert Hight collected his first win of the 2010 season in the Auto Club Ford Mustang with a 4.149 at 304.25 to runner-up Jack Beckman’s 4.204 at 296.44 mph in his Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger. Hight improved from ninth place to sixth place, though he still trails points leader John Force by 189 points.

“We’re starting to turn it around. We’re not that far off,” said Hight, who threw out the first pitch at the St. Louis Cardinals game on Wednesday on behalf of AAA Insurance of Missouri before proceeding to win the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals on Sunday. “It’s been an unbelievable week. The timing for this was perfect. I wanted to come here and win and give a trophy to the folks at AAA of Missouri.”

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, 20-year old LE Tonglet (7.002 at 189.47) had a nearly perfect reaction time (.001) in his quest for his first career win in just his eighth career start, but Michael Phillips (6.926 at 193.99) had more than enough power to catch and pass him for his first win of the season.

“That kid didn’t cut me any slack. He’s a good rider and he’s gonna be tough,” said Phillips, who improved to fourth place and is just 91 points behind first-place Hector Arana. “Now that the Suzuki guys have bigger engines, it’s going to be real competitive this year. It’s not just going to be the V-Rods and the Buell’s. Now, we can all make a statement.”

The NHRA Full Throttle Series resumes racing May 14-16 with the 30th annual Summit Racing NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
